Ancestors of Grietje VAN WIJK - An Incomplete Record

There is an alphabetical list of all named persons at the end of the web page.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTES -- PLEASE READ

This information is from my "documented" database, which means it contains information from those documents that I have thus-far entered. The good side of this is that everything here has a solidly-documented source. The bad side of this is that some known information is not included (such as almost all of the many Decker children of Grietje) and also that in some cases, where there is only one source so far, there may be an error in that source.

A great deal of information found by Gerben de Jong and Sibbele Postma and reported to me by Sibbele Postma (in documents in the Frysk language) is NOT yet included here. Nor are 3 documents (23 Oct 1820 death of Gesina Leenderts, 2 Nov 1789 birth of Jannes van Wijk, 19 Sep 1825 marital consent to Jannes by father Gerrit) whose images Sibbele Postma sent to me, nor 1 image (26 Sep 1921 death of Jacob Wierda) that Tom Rittenburg sent to me. I have included a great deal, which took a tremendous effort, and the rest will have to wait to be gradually added, as I can do so.

One significant fact that I have just learned is that Grietje's first cousin, Fekke Fekkes Postma (son of her mother's sister), came to America in 1854 -- 14 years before Gerrit van Wijk moved his family to America -- and wrote letters back to Friesland from America. There is much more to learn about this, but I have learned that Fekke Postma's sister's daughter (born in Holland) was married at age 48 in 1913 in Washington state. So this very new topic has a lot more to learn about.

Special thanks to Tom Rittenburg, descendant of Willemke van Wijk, for the pictures of Martha Feenstra, Jannes van Wijk, and Janke Tjittes Smit. And thanks also to Sibbele Postma (whose wife Durkje Pietersma descends from Wiebe Douwes Feenstra and his wife Grietje Robijns de Jong) and to Gerben de Jong (who also descends from Wiebe and Grietje) for the information that they have supplied for my "undocumented" database -- and to let us know the above-mentioned and other corrections.

If you see any errors in my translations of the Dutch or Frysk language sources -- or errors in anything else, please let me know. This is definitely a "work in progress", and there is much more to learn.

Yn it befolkingsregister fan de gemeente Grootegast oer it tiidrek dat Gerrit

Hja kamen yn Grootegast te wenjen yn hs nmer 114K en as leauwe stie by
elkenien "N.H.". Foarearst waarden seis nammen notearre nammentlik dy fan Gerrit
Jannes van Wijk, Martje Wybes Feenstra, Johannes Gerrits van Wijk, Willemke
Gerrits van Wijk, Grietje Gerrits van Wijk en Willem Gerrits van Wijk. Nei
befolkingsregisters mear foarkomt, net altyd like krekt. Wol wie it sa dat
Jehannes op`e nij berne wie yn Oldemarkt op 15 febrewaris 1851, lykas yn
Westdongeradiel oantekene stie.

Mei`t Janke as ldste fan`e bern earst nei Willem, de jongste fan de fiif
ynskreaun waard sil hja yndie letter nei Grootegast kommen wze as de oaren. Dat
it earder wie as it tskriuwen t Holwert wei docht bliken t in earnstich
barren.
Martsje ien fan harren bern.

It oare jier lykwols yn juny wreidet de hshlding wer t, in lytse Wiebe, neamd
nei Martsje har heit kaam yn Grootegast op`e wrld. In blier barren dat
spitigernch, lykas mei de earste beide jonkjes dy`t Willem neamd waarden,
omslein wze sil yn fertriet doe`t Wiebe al nei seis dagen kaam te ferstjerren.
Sawat twa jier letter fernijt it befolkingsregister s fan it freizgjen fan de
ldste soan Jannes, hy wurdt op 11 maart 1867 tskreaun nei Kampen.

In goed jier letter, sa docht dan t it befolkingsregister bliken, hawwe Gerrit
en Martsje in foar de hiele hshlding yngripend beslt nommen. It is noch
America"!
Soe de oanwzigens dr fan Martsje har neef Fekke Postma, in soan fan muoike
Hendrikjen Robijns de Jong en Fekke Fekkes Postma in rol spile hawwe? Yn
febrewaris 1854 wiene dy fan Gaasterln f fuortgien en it is bekend dat Fekke
t Amearika wei brieven nei Frysln skreau.

____ TRANSLATION ____

In the Population Register of the community of Grootegast concerning the [tiidrek] that Gerrit's
household there [oankomme kinne soe], it shows that in book 10, page 327
was inscribed on 25 May 1864 from out of Westdongeradiel the family of
coppersmith Gerrit Jannes van Wijk.

They came into Grootegast to reside in house number 114K and [as] [?leauwe = renters?] stie by
elkenien "N.H.".] [Foarearst waarden] six names [?notearre = noted?] namely those of Gerrit
Jannes van Wijk, Martje Wybes Feenstra, Johannes Gerrits van Wijk, Willemke
Gerrits van Wijk, Grietje Gerrits van Wijk and Willem Gerrits van Wijk. After
[harren] names came that of Janke Gerrits van Wijk and therewith the [nderstelling]
that they [har lden] [?t Holwert wei = from Holwert?] [letter folge wie wier wurden.]
[De by] the household were written birth dates and birth places berteplakken, [?lykas = likely? probably?] in
the Population Register [mear foarkomt, net altyd like krekt.] Well was it thus that
Jehannes [op`e nij] was born in Oldemarkt on 15 February 1851, [?lykas = likely? probably?] stayed in
Westdongeradiel [oantekene].

[?With = Mei`t?] Janke as eldest of the children [?earste nei = first after?] Willem, the youngest of the five
was inscribed [sil hja yndie] [?letter nei Grootegast kommen wze = would later come to Grootegast?] [?as de oaren = as the others had done?]. That
[it earder wie as it tskriuwen t Holwert wei] shows [t in earnstich
barren.] Gerrit and Martsje [hiene al] two young [misse moatten], but on 29
November 1864 came also the then 15 year old eldest dochter Janke to die in
Grootegast. In Kollum, in Holwert and now also in Grootegast [?ferlearen = lost?] Gerrit and
Martsje one of their children.

The other year [=? the next year?] [?lykwols = likewise?] in June [wreidet] the household [wer t], [in lytse] Wiebe, [?neamd
nei = named after?] Martsje's fathercame in Grootegast [?op`e wrld = into the world?]. [In blier barren] that
[spitigernch], [?lykas = likely? probably?] with the first of both youngsters of whom were named Willem,
[omslein wze sil yn fertriet doe`t] Wiebe [al nei] six days came to die.
[Sawat] two years later [fernijt] the Population Register [s fan it freizgjen] of the
eldest son Jannes, he was on 11 March 1867 written out to Kampen.

A good year later, as it shows then out of the Population Register, Gerrit
and Martsje have made a radical decision for the whole household. It is still
guessing at the reason, of course, but on 15 May 1868 Gerrit and Martsje with the
children Willemke, Grytsje and Willem were written out to "N. America"!
Should the presence there of Martsje's cousin Fekke Postma, a son of aunt
Hendrikjen Robijns de Jong and Fekke Fekkes Postma have played a role? In
February 1854 they did depart from Gaasterln, and it is known that Fekke
wrote letters from America to Friesland.

In reply to your abovementioned letter, I can inform you as follows.

1. From the records of the 3rd Battalion National Militia it is known that Johannes van Wijk was born at Zwolle (in Overijssel) November 29, 1789, Son of Gerrit van Wijk and Gesina Leenders.
August 26, 1805 he joined the 2nd Regiment of Infantry of the Army of King Louis of Holland (Napoleon's brother). The 1st battalion of this regiment was sent to Spain to help Joseph Napoleon, then King of Spain.
October 25, 1808 the Dutch Brigade, commanded by Major-General David Hendrik Baron Chass (later the defender of the citadel of Antwerp) crossed the Spanish border near Bayonne.
In July 1810 our country was annexed by the French Empire and our Army incorporated in the French Army. The 2nd Regiment of Infantry then became 123ime rgiment d'infanterie de ligne.
April 12, 1811 the two battalions of this regiment, serving in Spain, joined the 130ime rgiment d'infanterie de ligne, that was disbanded May 12, 1814 after Napoleon's abdication. Van Wijk, who became a corporal March 29, 1812 deserted the French Army and March 19, 1814 joined the 3rd Battalion National Militia of our new army. He was promoted a corporal April 25, 1814 and a sergeant May 6, 1814.
On June 18, 1815 his battalion took part in the battle of Waterloo and by Order in Council of August 17, 1815 Nr 77 he was appointed Knight 4th Class in the Military Order of William.
He was honourably discharged from the Army on May 31, 1817. From 1805 till his desertion from the French Army he was a regular soldier. In our army he was a conscript, who voluntary substituted for Markus de Leeuw from Steenwijk. It can be accepted that he thereafter recieved a certain amount from de Leeuw.

2. In Spain he took part in the following actions:
Battle of Durango (October 31, 1808)
Storming of Mesa de Ibor (March 17, 1809)
Defence of Merida (May 15/June 13, 1809)
Battle of alavera de la Reina (July 28, 1809)
Battle of Almonacid (August 11, 1809)
Battle of Ocana (November 19, 1809)
From November 29 till December 23 his unit escorted Spanish prisoners of war from Madrid to Bayonne.
In 1810 the war in Spain developed in a way of warfare that from then on was called "guerilla".
In Spain sergeant van Wijk received a grazing shot on his head.

3. The Military Order of William, in which van Wijk became a Knight 4th Class, has four classes, viz:
Grandcross, Commander, Knight 3rd Class en [sic = "and"] Knight 4th Class and is granted to sovereigns and to soldiers of all ranks of the Netherlands forces and the forces of allies.
The Order can be given to units as well and with two Regiments of the Royal Netherlands Army this honour is shared by four regiments of the United States Army (325th, 504th, 505th and 508th Infantry). Four other regiments (327th, 501st, 502nd and 506th Infantry) only have the right of wearing a lanyard in the colours of the Orders Ribbon (blue and orange).

4. The Dutch names of the abovementioned units of our Army were:
Battalion National Militia from January 9, 1814 till April 15, 1815 Bataljon Landmilitie, from April 15, 1815 till December 31, 1819 Bataljon Nationale Militie, thereafter the battalion was 3rd battalion of the 8th Infantry Regiment.

2nd Regiment of Infantry from June 11, 1805 till September 17, 1806
1ste Regiment Infanterie van Ligne, from September 17,1806 till August 18, 1810 2de Regiment Infanterie van Linie.

Knight 4th Class in the Military Order of William reads in Dutch: Ridder Vierde Klasse in de (or "der") Militaire Willems Orde.

5. In our collection we have pictures as well of the 2nd Infantry in Spain as of the Prince of Orange, leading the National Militia at Waterloo. I herewith send you fotocopies of those pictures.

Jannes is troud De Jouwer op tongersdei 8 desimber 1825 middeis healwei fjouweren (bld 30), yn 'e ldens fan 36 jier (2) mei Janke Tjittes Smit.

Oardel moanne nei it houlik docht bliken dat Jannes nei it ferstjerren fan syn frou Geartsje ridlik gau yn in prekre sitewaasje kaam te sitten.

Gerrit nderskreau it konsint mei "G van Wyk".

Yn`e taheakke siet fierder noch in bertebewiis foar Janke en in stik oangeande it ferstjerren fan Jannes syn mem "Geziena Leenderts". Ut in oar stik yn de taheakke docht bliken dat Jannes no net al tefolle like te fertsjinjen, der wiene in master bakker en in keapman dy`t foar him ferklearje koene dat er net by steat wie de kosten fan de foar it houlik needsaaklike stikken te beteljen. Op basis drfan wie him in bewiis fan nfermogen fjn.

Haskerland, Overlijdensakte Haskerland, 1826 - blad nr. 25 (This document is referenced in the 19 Nov 2004 report generated (in Frysk) by Sibbele Postma (De Snpelsen 20; 8651 BT Drylts, Netherlands; telephone 0515 531977; e-mail sibbelepostma@castel.nl)) ID: HOL-FR-A-00029r. stoarn De Jouwer op moandei 14 augustus 1826 yn hs nmer 129, jns fiif oere (bld 25 - akte 25).

It docht drmei bliken dat de oanjouwers Tjitte syn lden net goed by namme koene.

De oanjouwers fan Tjitte syn ferstjerren hawwe nei alle gedachten ek mis west mei it berteplak fan Tjitte.

died Joure on Monday 14 August 1826 in house 129, in the evening at five o'clock (page 25 - record 25).

In Tjitte's death record was amongst others written that he was a ship's carpenter and born at the "Groote Gaast" as the son of a ship's carpenter with the name Heerke and his wife Janke. It shows therewith that the reporters (of Tjitte's death) Tjitte's parents did not know well by name. But they did report that Tjitte was 60 years old and the husband of Geertje Bonnes.
The reporters of Tjitte's death had presumably also been wrong with the birthplace of Tjitte. The Grutte Gaast will have stand for Tsjerkgaast and sure Tjitte's parents have lived there and it looks like it they came up from there moving to the Joure. However the baptism book of Tsjerkgaast shows that Tjitte was yet born in Dunegea and when his parents in 1768 let baptize son Hylke, then they live indeed in Tsjerkgaast. At least that was the place where Hylke came on the world.

Sorry, but I have not found a way to automatically generate this list and thus no way to easily create links to the people. But they are all on this one web page. So you can use your browser's FIND feature to locate anyone.

NOTE that alternate names and spellings are NOT included. Thus the Garrett Vanwyke who was a farmer in Michigan in the 1890's and early 1900's is shown under his birth name, Johannes Gerrits van Wijk, and Grace Van Wyck who married Jan Boezel and Burt Decker appears under her birth name, Grietje Gerrits van Wijk.
