Wesley Johnston and John Butson's Early Butson Research
The Records

John Butson (of Devon) and Wesley Johnston (originally of Illinois, now of California) separately researched Butson family history over several decades and gathered many records. In 2011, we connected with each other and began combining what we had gathered and concluded.

This page presents the records that we have found. The records are separated geographically.

The earliest records of Butsons are at Blackborough in Devon, dating back to 1086. The earliest records in Cornwall are in the 1600's at St. Merryn and then nearby Padstow and at St. Agnes.

Things to Know

The main records that were kept were the parish registers. Fortunately, the bishop also required that a transcript of the parish registers be sent to him. Thus in some cases where the original parish registers are lost, the bishop's transcripts are all that remain of the record.
