Wesley Johnston's Loyalist Lake Family History Main Page
Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to conceive.

My 4th great grandmother Mary Ward was the daughter of Sarah Lake, whose father Christopher Lake and his parents and some of his siblings were Loyalists during the American Revolution. After the Revolution, these Loyalist Lake families moved to the area of Ernestown Township in Upper Canada (what is now Ontario), west of Kingston. This web page is the main page that organizes all the other web pages and files that I have put together on the Loyalist Lake families.

DNA

Members of our Loyalist Lake e-mail group have done extensive work with Lake descendant DNA. In some cases, we have verified with DNA connections for which records do not now exist. In others, we have combined indirect records and DNA connections to identify maiden names. Please contact me (see below) if you are a Loyalist Lake descendant who has DNA-tested. We strongly recommend that all DNA testers upload their results to the free GEDmatch database, which is where we do the vast majority of our analysis.

Upper Canada Land Petitions

The Loyalists who came to Upper Canada (what is now Ontario) were able to petition for land grants from the government. These records are now online at the Library and Archives of Canada web site, but they take some learning to know how to find what you seek. So, I have created a web page about how to do such searches. Some petitions and other records are also found in the Upper Canada Sundries collection. So, I have created a web page about how to do Sundries searches. See the separate Sundries section below for additional Sundries records that are not in the Land Petition index.

I have downloaded images of all 91 petitions of the Lake family (89 from the Land Petitions collection and 2 from the Sundries collection) and some petitions of related families (see related families after all the LAKE petitions). And this section presents all of those. After each petition, two links labeled I (for Images) and T (for transcription) allow you to see either a PDF file of the original images of that petition or a web page with a transcription (and in some cases additional information) of the petition.

The final part of this section is unrelated petitions of relevance. It may be that we are in fact related to the ones in these positions but have not yet learned this connection. But even if there is no connection, the material in these petitions includes very relevant material to our family.

There are multiple ways to put the petitions in order: chronological, alphabetical by name, by microfilm-bundle-petition number. I have decided to do it chronologically, by the date when the petition was made, with the earliest ones first. NOTE that I use the dates the petitions were originally made, while the LAC index apparently uses the dates that the petitions were granted. In some cases, these dates are as many as 10 years apart.

The information on this web page originated from a spreadsheet in which I captured all of the index information, plus the URL of the first image of each petition. This spreadsheet contains worksheets that list the information in different sort orders and also includes some statistical summaries. Click here to see the spreadsheet. In cases where a petitioner self-identified as being from a particular township, I use that township below. In the other cases, I use the location of the signing of the document as the township. Clearly, this may not be the petitioner's actual residence, but it is the only township identified in the record, so that it is what I use. In some cases, the petitioner's parent is identified as being from a township, but there is no location for the petitioner, so that I use the location of the signing of the document in those cases. Here is an example of a full Library and Archives Canada citation for the 1797 Christopher Lake Petition: "Lake, Christopher, Kingston, 285A, L 8, 30, RG 1, L3, C-2125".

Upper Canada Sundries

The Upper Canada Sundries are miscellaneous documents (correspondence, petitions, etc.) from 1766 to 1841 on 94 reels of microfilm. There is no complete name index. They require some learning to know how to find what you seek. So I have created a web page about how to do such searches.

Two of the LAKE sundries records are indexed in the Upper Canada Land Petitions index and are thus included above in the Upper Canada Land Petitions section. Where additional Sundries records relate to one person in the Land Petitions section who can be identified as the same person, the Sundries record is included above in the Land Petitions section. Thus, this section contains additional Sundries records, such as those that contain multiple names or those that cannot be definitely connected to someone in the Land Petitions section. Some of these people may be in the Land Petitions section, but some are definitely not.

In some cases the referenced person(s) is/are the primary person of the record. In other cases, they may be auxiliary persons, such as signers of a petition or someone acting on behalf of the primary person.

The entries are arranged chronologically. Click on the "I" link in a record to see the image or the "T" link (if there is one) to see the transcription of the text. NOTE that the number of an entry may change as more entries are added.
