WHERE ARE THEY?

Issue number 4 was not deliverable to the following. Do you have their address?

ODDS AND ENDS

  1. WHO IS THE OLDEST LIVING BUTSON? Who is the oldest living Butson descendant? Please send birthdates for your nominees so we can accurately compare. Also send parents' names and the nominee's current address if you can.
  2. In England, we found a cat named Butson (in Braunton, N. Devon) and the remains of a mine named Wheal Butson (about 1 mile out of St. Agnes, Cornwall). Do you know of any other place names, etc. with "Butson" in them?
  3. Many of you have wondered about MY own Butson connection. I am the son of Walter G. Johnston, Jr., son of Walter Johnston, son of George Henry Johnston, son of Emma Butson, daughter of Henry Butson, son of Solomon Butson and Jane Keam who came to the Oshawa, Ontario area of Canada about 1840. Emma, and her husband John Johnston, married in 1876 in Reach Township, Ont. They brought their 4 year old son to Chicago in 1881, apparently the first branch of this Butson line to move permanently to the U.S.
  4. "Distribution of Butsons in Great Britain" from our number 4 issue was published as a research note in the Fall 1982 issue of the Ontario Genealogical Society's quarterly "Families".

AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

  1. Betty Butson sent a wealth of records. She writes that William Butson (son of Jonathan Butson and Jane Derrick of Bristol, England; see ENGLAND in this issue), and Janet Paton received a family Bible when they married in 1873. This Bible recorded the names of 5 of their children, but Janet's death certificate (see below) numbered 8 children. Their eldest son, William Paton Butson, was the grandfather of Kenneth Butson, now of Blackburn, Victoria, 2nd cousin of Betty Butson's husband Robert. Through the newsletter, Kenneth contacted Robert and Betty to compile a lot of information. Other descendants of William Butson and Janet Paton are invited to contact her:

She sent a copy of the pedigree, chart of Kenneth Samuel BUTSON (b 23 Jan 1931 at Caulfield), son of William Charles Arthur BUTSON (b 3 June 1899 Richmond, Melb.; m 24 Sep 1927 to Elsie Elvira GREENLAW at South Yarra, Melb.; d 10 July 1974 Melb.), son and eldest of two children of William Paton BUTSON (b 13 Nov 1874 Kew, Melb.; m 5 Aug 1897 to Elizabeth CHARLTON at Melb.), son and eldest of eight children of William BUTSON (b 1845 Bristol, U.K.; m 24 Sept 1873 to Janet Anderson PATON at Kilmore), son of Jonathan BUTSON (m Jane DERRICK).

She also sent photocopies of two vital records certified by the Office of the Government Statist of the State of Victoria:

    1. Marriage in the District of Kilmore, Colony of Victoria. Number 2 in register. 24 September 1873. William BUTSON (Bachelor; born Bristol England; coachman; age 28; present and usual residence: Wellington Street, Kew; father: Jonathan BUTSON (labourer); mother: Jane BUTSON (Maiden Name, DERRICK)) to Janet Anderson PATON (Spinster; born Kilmore Victoria; domestic servant; age 18; present and usual residence: George Street, Kilmore; father: James PATON (boundary rider); mother: Catherine PATON (Maiden Name, PARK)). Minister: Andrew HARDIE of St. George’s Presbyterian Church, KiImore. Had "written consent of Catherine PATON of George Street, Kilmore, the Mother of the Bride." Witnesses: John TAYLOR, Caroline HAMILTON.
    2. Death in District of Armadale, State of Victoria. 1927. Number 2633. Died I January 1927 (1 cannot be sure of location: 26 Lorne March, East Prahran, County of Bourle?). Janet BUTSON. Female, 68 years. Cause: (1) carcinoma-uterus (approximate duration: 12 months) and (2) toxemia (duration: gradual). It gives more, including her parents and details of burial, and her issue, in order of birth:

Betty Butson also sent the following:

  2. John Butson Tregea sent a pedigree chart of his Butson line. He (b 21 Jan 1920 Sydney NSW; m 21 Jan 1950 to Joyce Isabel SHAMBLER at Sydney NSW) is the son of Arthur Butson TRGRA (b 16 June 1887 Nelson NZ; m 25 April 1912 to Alice Mary WILLIAMS at Sydney NSW; d 30 August 1964 Sydney NSW), son of Arthur Butson TREGEA (b 25 September (?) 1859 Nelson NZ; m 26 October 1882 to Agnes MC KENZIE; d 27 May 1950), son of John Butson TREGEA (b 19 February 1818 St. Agnes, Cornwall, England; m 9 December 1843 to Grace MENHENETT at St. Agnes; d 9 December 1881 Nelson NZ), son of John George TREGEA and Sophia BUTSON (See ENGLAND for further details.).

CANADA

  1. There are only two known Butson families of Canada ... so far. These are Solomon's (c 1840, Oshawa, Ont. area) and Arthur Henry Cecil's (c 1900, Midland, Ont. area). However, the following references have not yet been linked to these families. Are they part of yet another Butson family or are they related to the two already known?

The first was sent in by Laura Phoebe Deakin The 1861 census of the town of Goderich, Huron County, Ont. shows ("do" means "ditto", which repeats the text immediately above it):

    Name Age (status) Birthplace Religion
Thomas Butson 32 Laborer England CofE
Mary 21 wife of TB England CofE
Elizabeth 3 child do Canada W CofE
William 1 child do do CofE

  2. Linda Lowrey sent the second. John BUTSON of Cornwall (son of W. J. BUTSON) went to the Clinton, B.C. area in the 1850's. His sister, Harriett Ann BUTSON (born 1828 at Whitehall (in Cornwall?)), married John CHENHALL in Cornwall before moving (as "Mrs. CHENHALL") about 1850 to either the Coulterville, Ont. or the Owen Sound, Ont. area.

  3. My own research in England in 1981 brought to light some of the ancestry of Jane KEAM, wife of Solomon BUTSON, and mother of the largest branch of Canadian BUTSONs. See ENGLAND in this issue.

ENGLAND

  1. Terry Butson sent a brief summary of his Butson ancestry. He was born 1946, son of Lenard Fredrick Warnerford BUTSON, son 1914(?) of Fredrick BUTSON. Terry has 2 daughters and a sister. His father had 1 sister. His grandfather had 1 brother.

  2. Malcolm Butson's ancestors came from the Crediton area of Devon. Some have come to the U.S. Two cousins from Brodhembury, Devon married the same day and went to Topsham, Vt. Another branch from Tiverton is represented by a Mrs. DUTTON in Wells River, Vt. or N.H. or in Lisbon, N.H. or Littleton, N.H. (My notes also have the words Reefe and Newcansthwaite, but I forget how they fit.)

  3. Mrs. Donald Spensley writes that (1) the Platteville, Wis. (U.S.) area Butsons are descended from Thomas BUTSON, Jr., born 1839 Cornwall to Thomas BUTSON and Susan RICHARDS. (2) Her co-researcher Sandra Luebking (small world! I have known Sandra for several years through Illinois research.) recorded the cemetery marker of another Thomas BUTSON and wife Alice and several sons and daughters in the Inghamite Cemetery, Wheatley Lane, Pendleside, North Lancashire. (3) Finally, Mrs. Spensley writes: "Edmund Cooper tells us in MUKER: THE STORY OF A YORKSHIRE PARISH that Butson was one of the family names most found in the parish registers of Muker from 1638 to 1840..."

  4. Sallie Phillips sent the LDS CFI extracts of PHILLIPS in Luxulyan. The absence of the marriage of Mary PHILLIPS’ to Robert KEAM causes me to believe that the CFI for Luxulyan PHILLIPS is incomplete.

While in England, I traced part of the line of Jane KEAM, the wife of Solomon BUTSON (the immigrant to Canada). Solomon and Jane married at St. Blazey, Cornwall on 15 March 1817. Her brother Nicholas was a witness. Her sister Charity also married (to Thomas CARPENTER) at St. Blazey on 5 July 1817. Jane was baptized 22 July 1792 at Luxulyan. (Charity was younger than Jane: bap. 6 November 1796). Four of Jane's children eventually bore the names of her parents and siblings.

Jane's parents Robert KEAM and Mary PHILLIPS, married 22 July 1792 at Luxulyan, which seems to have been home for these KEAMs and PHILLIPS for many generations. It was probably Jane's father who died at St. Blazey in 1837, leaving a will.

  5. Richard Ross sent the following valuable information. He is doing an index of Cornwall marriages which are NOT in the classic Boyd marriage index. (His are marked with an asterisk: Boyd's are unmarked.) He has the dates for these marriages if we need them.

  6. Linda Lowrey writes that her Harriett Ann BUTSON was born 1828 at Whitehall in England. She believes this to be in Cornwall, since all of the other family events are there. I find no parish named Whitehall in Cornwall. Can anyone tell us which Cornish parish contained a place named Whitehall?

  7. Betty Butson sent (1) a copy of the 1851 census of the city of Bristol (parish of Bedminster) for household 76, which appears to have the address: Cox Barton; Foest Street. All of the BUTSONs were born in Somerset Bedminster. The lodgers were born at Gloucester, Magasfil (?) and Gloucester Kingsroad, respectively.

She also sent (2) a copy of the 25 March 1839 marriage record (by-banns) of Jonathan BATSON (sic) to Jane DERRICK in the parish church in the parish of Temple in the county and city of Bristol. They were both under age, he a bachelor, she a spinster. He was a coal miner. Both lived on Temple Street. His father was William BATSON (sic), a coal miner. Her father was Thomas DERRICK, a laborer. (Since they both made their marks spelling of their names was unknown to them; thus the variant spelling of his surname.) The witnesses were Edward E. FISHER and Patience DERRICK.

  8. Brian Butson sent (1) a brief summary of his Butson ancestry. His father, Percy Buller BUTSON, was born January 1901 in Tiverton, Devonshire. He married Edith SMITH about 1930. They had three sons (Graham Dennis Cyprian, Brian Michael Oliver, and Peter David) and a daughter (Olive, who died at age 3 1/2). Percy had three brothers (Charles, Charles (adopted), and Harry) and a sister (Cissy). (2) He reports that the graveyard of the parish church of Tiverton has many BUTSON stones. (3) Percy’s father apparently spent some time in the U.S. in the late 1800’s, apparently having been decorated for heroism during the Johnstown Flood.

  9. John Butson Tregea’s family moved from St. Agnes, Cornwall to New Zealand in the 1840’s or 1850’s. He has located the marriage of John George TREGEA and Sophia BUTSON at St. Agnes, but he cannot determine her parents. He sent the following census abstracts:

U.S.A.

  1. Robert Paul Butson writes that he is a nephew of Clythe BUTSON of Oregon, son of Solomon and Sarah of Hillsboro, N.D. Clythe is the brother of Franklin R. (d. 1950), Orel Merrill (of Fargo, N.D., d. 1972), Beth (of Alexandria, MN, d. 1969). Clythe is the father of four children: Donald, Robert, James, and Beverly.

Thanks to Cameron Vivian and a Staffa, Ont. (Canada) member of the KEMP family (Clythe’s mother was a KEMP), we now have an address for Clythe’s daughter, Mrs. Beverly HOERNTLEIN of Eugene, Oregon. Clythe is a candidate for being the oldest living BUTSON. He was born 16 December 1888.

  2. William R. Butson writes that he is the grandson of William BUTSON and Bertha MILLER of Kelly Lake, Minnesota. His uncle Thomas BUTSON (and wife Joan (another KEMP!) and children Lynn and John) live in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. William’s brother Russell D. BUTSON and wife Marie (OOSTMAN) live in South Bend, Indiana.

  3. Malcolm Butson related (see the English section) that there are BUTSON relatives in Vermont and New Hampshire.

  4. Mrs. Donald Spensley writes (see the English section) that the Platteville, Wisconsin area BUTSONs are descended from Thomas BUTSON, born 1839 Cornwall, son of Thomas BUTSON and Susan RICHARDS. The Wisconsin Thomas married Mary GILL, daughter of Isaiah GILL and Jane BRONSON (to whom Mrs. SPENSLEY’s husband is distantly related).
