WARNING

The material in this newsletter letter is comprised entirely of material that was mailed to me prior to issue Number 5 (Fall 1982). I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the data. As I typed, I tried to spot problems and resolve or highlight them. I have also tried to put some things into better context. Thus you will see items in parentheses with my initials (like this (WJ)) where I have made a comment. These parenthetic entries were not part of what the person sent me. Letters sent after issue Number 5 will be included in the next issue, which will have all of our regular columns.

AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND

  1. Tom Butson (New York City; 1978) wrote that his great-grandfather, Samuel Butson, emigrated from Newquay, Cornwall to Australia about 1850. After a few years there, he moved his wife and infant son (Thomas Solomon Butson) to New Zealand. Tom's father, Vivian, was born in Garston, N.Z. He himself was born 1931 in Winton, N.Z. In 1951, he left N.Z. and moved to Canada. He worked for several years for Ontario (where he owned a farm near Markdale) and Manitoba newspapers. In l968, he moved to New York to work for the New York Times. Many of his family live in Invercargill, Garston, Queenstown, and other towns in the Southland district of the South Island.

  2. The data from all other letters for Australia and New Zealand was published in issue number 3 and issue number 4.

CANADA

  1. Lena Million (Stratford, Ontario; 1981) sent a summary of "The Millions ," one of the lines of descendants of Solomon Butson. (Solomon and Jane's 6th son and 8th child was James, who married Rebecca Fidget. Their 2nd son and 4th child was Leonard J., who married Margaret NORRIS, (WJ)) Leonard and Margaret's 3rd son was Roy (of Staffa and Munro, Ontario), who married Myrtle. Their 2nd daughter, born 1921, was Lena.

Lena's children are the Millions: Patricia L. (1941); Gerald (1946); m Ramona; dau Erin and Elizabeth); twins (1947) Janice and Judith (m Lyle JACKSON; dau Tammy; son Ian J.); Peter (1950) m Darlene; son Sean); Nancy (1952; m WEEKS); Lu Anne Margaret (1956); and David (1961).

  2. Joyce Cribbie (Willowdale, Ont.; 1981), a member of the Ont. Genealogical Society, found the following tombstone transcription in the Strong Cemetery of the Parry Sound-Muskoka districts in the book "These Our Ancestors Were": William Butson (b 1824 (son of Solomon Butson & Jane Keam (WJ)), d 1900); Susan Adams, wife of William Butson (b 1830, d 1908); George H. Butson (b 1868, d 1946); Milford G. Butson, husband of Janet CALDWELL (b 1899, d 1965). Mrs. Cribbie notes that Janet Butson still resides in Sundridge, Ont.

  3. Laura Phoebe Deakin (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; 1982) sent a list of Ontario Butson marriages given to her by a member of her local genealogical society. While it contains Whitby and Reach marriages I have already located, this list goes beyond any I have seen before and provides new help in dating the voyage of Solomon Butson and family to Canada.

Until now, we could tell that the youngest son, Robert Keam Butson, was born in England 15 March 1835 and that the oldest son Thomas Butson died at Oshawa, Ont. 11 December 1846. The family came to Canada sometime in between these two events, probably as a part of the great diaspora of Cornish miners in the early 1840s (a result of the end the Cornish monopoly on tin, due to the discovery of tin in Australia, the U.S., and Germany). Now, we have an earlier record in Canada: the marriage of Solomon and Jane's oldest child, Mary Keam Butson, took place on 19 July 1841 - more than five years before Thomas' death. Thus Solomon's family came to Canada sometime between 15 March 1835 and 19 July 1841. Here are all of the marriages. The original spellings are retained. Usually when a place is referred to it is a township and not a village (i.e., Whitby).

    *

Despite this transcription, Robert Keam Butson was the son of Solomon and Jane, not of James and Bridget.

    **

The minister filled this entry out wrongly. He was apparently confused because the bride was Rebecca FIGGIT and so was her mother.

    ***

Any information about Henry, Charity, or Mary and their families would be GREATLY appreciated! These two children of Solomon and Jane have left almost no traces. Henry apparently had a prior wife named Sarah and was in Lindsay about 1895.

  4. Tom Butson's item under Australia and New Zealand is also relevant to Canada.

  5. Laura Phoebe Deakin (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; 1979 & 1980) sent her family's records (See item 10 below.). She is a descendant of Solomon Butson and Jane Keam, through their son John (b 18 December 1822) in his second marriage (to Fanny WOOD, dau of Daniel WOOD and Jane BUTLER). John and Fanny's son was born 18 December 1866 on Lot 14, Conc. VII, Hibbert Twp., Perth County, Ont. (which is near Staffa). On that Lot, Fanny died 1870 and John, Sr. 1876; both are buried at Staffa Cemetery.

  6. June Wannamaker (Oshawa, Ont. 1979 & 1980) sent her ancestry. She is a descendant of Solomon Butson and Jane Keam. Her father was Josiah Butson, who married twice. His second wife was Rose Ann LACY. Josiah and Rose Ann are now dead. Their children are Kenneth and June. June and her husband (who was killed in an accident) have three children: twins Diane Lyn and Richard William, and Ronald David. The twins are married.

  7. Harold Butson (Midland, Ont. 1980) sent some of his family's records. He is a son of Arthur Henry Cecil Butson (1878-1970) who came to Canada. The rest of this letter was published in issue number 2. No further information on Arthur Henry Cecil's descendants has come in yet.

  8. Shirley I. S. McCrea (Calgery, Alta. 1980) is the daughter of William Stanley MERKLEY and Sarah Elizabeth BUTSON (See item 5 above.).

  9. Mrs. Denton May (Mountaintop, Penn. 1980), a member of the Ont. Genealogical Society, sent an extract of the 1851 Ontario County Census for Whitby Township (in District 1). The three oldest males are all listed as "No Church" in the religion column.

If this is a correct extract, then the Census taker recorded erroneous birthplaces for the last five. Solomon and Jane's ages are only about 10 years off.

  10. Laura Phoebe Deakin (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. 1979) sent more on the family of John Butson, son of Solomon and Jane (see item 5 above). She sent a photograph, taken in 1875 or 1876. She believes the names are incorrectly ordered under the photograph. The photograph does show John, Sr., and John, Jr. (She notes, and I agree, that there is a close resemblance between John, Sr. and Cameron Vivian of Staffa, Ont., his great-grandson.) The children's names, in order from oldest-looking to youngest, are given as (boys) Solomon, Richard, John; (girls) Mary Jane, Elizabeth, Liza, Maria, Esther, and Charity. The children's mother is not shown.

She also sent a summary of John, Sr.'s family (See item 12 below for more on this family.). John, Sr., (born 18 December 1822 St. Blazey, Cornwall to Solomon BUTSON and Jane KEAM; died 1876 Hibbert Twp., Perth County, Ontario) married twice. He first married Elizabeth HARPER (bap 25 Dec 1825 Luxulyan, Cornwall to John HARPER & Elizabeth DALBY; d 1862 Hibbert Twp.) 1 January 1849 in Reach Twp., Ontario County, Ontario. John and Elizabeth's children (in order) were:

    1. Elizabeth Ann b 9 March 1951 Pickering Twp., Ont.; d 1 December 1933 Ont.; m (1) Thomas VIVIAN (b (aged 72 yrs 21 days at death); d 20 April 1916 or 1919 Mitchell, Ont.; m (2) JACKSON
    2. Mary Jane b 16 Jan 1853 Hibbert Twp.; m Joseph HOGGARTH
    3. Solomon b 24 Jan 1856 Hibbert Twp.
    4. Maria b 10 Oct 1860 Hibbert Twp.; m James GOLDING

John, Sr.'s second marriage was to Fanny WOOD (b New York State to Daniel WOOD & Jane BUTLER; d 1870 Hibbert Twp.) 9 January 1862 at the United Church of England and Ireland, Stratford, Ont. John and Fanny's children (in order) were:

    1. Eliza b (age 13 at death) Hibbert Twp., Ont.; d 1877 bur Staffa, Ont.
    2. Esther b 24 Mar 1865 Hibbert Twp.; d 21 Aug 1950; m Crowell William SMITH (b 10 Aug 1867 Hyde Park; d 23 Jun 1913)
    3. John b 18 Dec 1866 Hibbert Twp. (See item 5 above.)
    4. Charity b Hibbert Twp.; m Sam KERSLAKE

Mrs. Deakin also sent a photo taken about 1916 or 1917 at the west end of the Soo locks (Canada side), showing John Butson (Jr., son of John, Sr.) and a Mr. Bishop. Their job was to signal the boats to enter the locks down bound.

  11. See the English section for more about the PHILLIPS ancestors of Jane KEAM, wife of Solomon BUTSON, who moved to Canada from Cornwall.

  12. Robert Fuller (Windsor, Ont. 1977), author of "The Barclays of Pickering," sent reminiscences about the family of John Butson (son of Solomon and Jane). John's first wife Elizabeth HARPER (see item 10 above), was the sister of Mr. Fuller's grandmother. He writes that John and Elizabeth's youngest, Maria, was only 2 when her mother died. She left the family in Hibbert Twp. And lived in Pickering Twp. with her uncle Richard, until she married GOLDING. He also has researched at Luxulyan, Cornwall. See the English section.

  13. John Jeffries (Brooklin, Ont. 1977) sent a copy of the "Parish History of St. Thomas' Church, Brooklin." This is relevant because Solomon and Jane (KEAM) BUTSON are buried at St. Paul's (Columbus) Cemetery half-way between Brooklin and Columbus. Mr. Jeffries wrote: "All the records relating to St. Paul's, Columbus, were lost when that church was destroyed by fire in 1922, and this brief history by Jean Robinson, one of our parishoners, appears to be the only record that gives some details of the parish of St. Paul's, Columbus."

There is not much on St. Paul's - none about its parishoners. But it does say "For the years 1859-60 Thomas Taylor was in charge of Columbus, Manchester and Reach." Thomas Taylor presided at the marriage of Robert Keam BUTSON and Sarah FIDGET (see item 5 above) in 1859. "Until 1858," the book says, "Columbus, St. John's (at Windsor Bay (WJ)) and Oshawa were under the same charge."

  14. Lois Heddon (Oshawa, Ont. 1980; died 31 Jan 1981) sent photos of both sides of the stone for Nicholas BUTSON (son of Solomon and Jane) in Brooklin Cemetery. The west side shows: "In / Memory of / Nicholas Butson / Born Nov. 6 1826 / Died Nov. 19, 1922 / His Wife / Anna Maria BURDGE / Born Aug. 10, 1849 (?) / Died June 24, 1925 / Their Daughter / Edna Butson / born June 13, 188? / Died Apr 15, 1894 (?)" The east side shows "In Memory of / John CRYDERMAN / Born April 19, 1809 / Died Dec. 1, 1899 / His Wife / Mary BOLEY / Born May 2, 1811 / Died Aug 5, 1891 (?) / Elizabeth BURDGE / Their Daughter / Born Aug. 29, 1850 / Died ???, 1878"

  15. Margaret Butson (Toronto 1977) wrote that her husband Arthur Edward Butson (then age 65 (he died about 1 July 1978 (WJ)) was an only child of Herbert Butson. Herbert had brothers Bert (Hamilton, Ont.; had one daughter) and Charlie (Scarboro, Ont.; had five children). See item 19 below for more on these families.

Arthur and Margaret have a son Peter (age 33 then) and a granddaughter (age 4 then).

  16. Ken Butson (Manor, Sask. 1980) sent records for John Edward and Susan Butson's family. Mrs. Harry CUMBERLAND (Maple Creek) was the oldest. Next was Hazel May Butson, now Mrs. Stanley SCOTT of Lloydminster. Kenneth Ivan was the 3rd, the only boy. The youngest was Thelma Butson (m Hartley SCOTT; lived Indian Head, Sask.; d 1950).

Ken married Ida Sarah DICKISON (3rd oldest girl of John DICKISON family of Ont.). Ken and Ida have four children:

    1. Etta May m Murray TAYLOR; lives Bruderheim, Alberta
    2. Edward Allen lives Manor, Sask.; m and has 2 children: Wanita and Michael
    3. Lloyd George lives Manor, Sask.; m and has 4 children: Maryanne Roseley, John Edward, George Allen, and Susan Ida
    4. Gertrude m Walter MAC CORNISH; lives Lloydminster, Saskatchewan

Ken says there was another Butson family that moved out from Ont. to Lumsden, Sask. about 1928. This was Earl and Beulah Butson. Earl's father was George Butson of Ont. They had two children: George is married and lives in Lumsden. Rebecca married a HAMILTON.

  17. Viola Hoskins and Golda Butson (Port Perry, Ont. 1979) wrote that there was a Bertha in the Robert (son of Solomon and Jane) Butson family. She married James ELLIS. They were Edna PRIGLE's parents.

  18. Edna Jamieson (Oshawa Public Library 1977) sent a photocopy of pages 213-216 of "On the Shores of Scugog" by Samuel Farmer (Port Perry Star, 1934). This section is entitled "Address delivered by his Honour Dr. H. A. Bruce, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, upon the occasion of the Cartwright Centennial, June 16, 17, 18, 1934, at Blackstock, Ontario." On pages 215-216, he says: "Let me now read to you the names of the men who were residents of the town of Cartwright from 1837-1845." Among the names are ADAMS, BUTSON, and HAMBLY.

Miss Jamieson also sent a photocopy of page iv from "Illustrated Atlas of Northumberland & Durham Counties" published 1878 at Toronto by H. Belden & Co. This has a very brief history of Cartwright Twp. which lists among the early settlers: ADAMS, BUTSON, and HAMBLEY.

She also sent a photocopy of pages 34 and 35 from "A Photo Album of Cartwright Township 1837-1973" compiled and edited by Doreen M. Van Camp for the Cartwright Twp. Council. Page 35 lists those named in Dr. Bruce's 1934 address.

  19. Thomas R. and Jewel Butson (Lindsay, Ont. 1977, 1981) sent records of his family. (See also item 15 above.) His grandfather was Richard Butson, who married Mary SECORD (daughter of Ann SECORD. Ann married Charles MABLY; she was a cousin of Laura SECORD of "Battle of Queenstown Heights" fame in the War of 1812.). Richard and Mary had three sons:

    1. Charles Henry
    2. Albert m Lily POOLE; has dau Margaret
    3. Herbert m Lucy; has son Arthur, who has son Peter, who is now married

Thomas' father, Charles Henry Butson, died in 1953. His mother, Alice Isabell Drynan died 13 April 1980. Charles and Alice had five children:

    1. Charles Allan called Allan; sons James and Murray
    2. Alice Isabell
    3. Evelyn Marie
    4. Harold Clythe called Harold; sons Brian and William. Thomas wrote that his mother said Charles corresponded with his cousin Clythe (then of N. Dak., now of Oregon) many years ago. Clythe (son of Solomon, son of John, son of Solomon and Jane) was probably the source of Harold's middle name.
    5. Thomas Robert sons Thomas Robert, Jr. and Bruce Allan

It should be noted that this letter was my first contact with any of my Butson relatives in Canada - or elsewhere. Thomas' suggestion that I write to Cameron Vivian of Staffa is the source and inspiration for the contacts which gave rise to this newsletter.

  20. Marion Parsons (Bowmanville, Ont. 1981) sent several items. She is the sister of Elsie Edith Orchard (m HEDDON; mother of Kenneth HEDDON and Lois HEDDON (see item 14 above)). Their mother was Mary Ann BUTSON (m John Coleman ORCHARD), daughter of Nicholas Butson (son of Solomon and Jane) and his second wife Mary MALYON.

She writes that John Ross FOX was the son of Thomas FOX and Laura BUTSON (dau Robert (& Lydia), son Solomon & Jane). He was born 11 Oct 1906 and died 25 Aug 1980. His first wife was Bertha WILLIS; second wife's name not known. He was thought to have lived in the London, Ont. area for some time.

His sister, Dora FOX, b 1910, d Dec 1980, m David KING, no children, lived Toronto.

Clara Marie NORRIS was the dau of Herbert NORRIS and Elizabeth BUTSON (grdau of Nicholas BUTSON & Mary MALYON; d 28 May 1966; bur Groveside Cemetery, Brooklin, Ont.). She married William Myles DOBSON, lived in Toronto and died 19 October 1980, leaving no children.

Lois Mary HEDDON was the dau of Frederick HEDDON and Elsie Elizabeth ORCHARD. She was born 17 Nov 1917 and died unwed 31 January 1981.

Richard James BUTSON (oldest child of Nicholas' first family) never married. He lived in Gadsby, Alberta. Other members of Nicholas' first family were:

    1. William Matthew d 1932; m Margaret; 2 sons: 1. killed in gravel pit accident, 2. Billy (m Elizabeth; no children)
    2. Anna Maria b 1857; d 1932; m William Edwin (Ned) ORCHARD (1857-1924; bur Gadsby, Alta.; brother of John Coleman ORCHARD who m Mary Ann Butson and Sarah Jane Butson (all dau of Nicholas), respectively); had 5 children:

ENGLAND

  1. Tom Butson's item under Australia and New Zealand is also relevant to England.

  2. Lois Butson Shandeor (Noank, Conn., USA 1980) wrote that her grandfather Joseph Butson came to America in 1891 from Fowey, Cornwall.

  3. Vernon Butson (Fergus Falls, Minn., USA 1980) wrote that his great-grandfather Thomas Butson reportedly came to America from Silverwill, Cornwall (Does anyone know what parish Silverwill is in?) in 1848, with his wife Susan Jane RICHARDS and son Thomas. However, Vernon's grandfather, James, was their 3rd (of 8) children and was born 1847; so there is a question. See the U.S. for further information.

  4. Sallie M. Phillips (Morecambe, Lancs. 1982), a member of the Cornwall Family History Society, sent the following partial list of Luxulyan, Cornwall PHILLIPS records. (Jane KEAM, wife of Solomon BUTSON , who came to Canada 1835-1841 was the daughter of Mary PHILLIPS and Robert KEAM. Jane was baptized at Luxulyan 22 July 1792. Her parents married at Luxulyan 25 July 1775.)

Sallie Phillips notes: "This sounds like a one parent family, but it is interesting to find that a Mary PHILLIPS married John COCK at Zennor on 5 Oct 1799 - not this Mary above but might be related." (Or might this be an adult baptism? (WJ))

  5. Linda Lowrey (Hamilton, Ont., Canada 1982) wrote that Harriett Ann Butson was born 1828 at Whitehall (presumably in Cornwall), England to W. J. BUTSON and Elizabeth TREVETHAN. W. J. and Elizabeth also had a son, John BUTSON.

  6. Robert Fuller (Windsor, Ont., Canada 1977) researched the HARPER family at Luxulyan, Cornwall (see several items on John BUTSON and Elizabeth HARPER in the Canada section.). John HARPER married Elizabeth DALBY 18 June 1822; both were born about 1790. They baptized five children at Luxulyan from 1823 to 1830. Mr. Fuller is in touch with descendants of all five: Susan (m John GREEN), Mary Ann (Mr. Fuller's grandmother), John (went to Ohio), Richard (wed twice), and Elizabeth.

  7. Jennifer Benson (Braunton, N. Devon 1981) sent many extracts from records of local Butsons. This line is unusual in that it is the only known BUTSON line in the north of Devonshire; the rest are central or south. She notes: "The earliest Butsons appear to have been very poor and are mentioned in the Poor Law Records for this parish. In 1823 William Butson was given money to provide 'shoes for Prudence' and in 1824 for shirt and childrens shoes."

    William Butson (d 1829) married Agnes COUCH (1784-1816) 9 Aug 1768.

Their son William (b 1773; labourer) married Prudence HARTNOLL (1785-1832) 3 June 1810.

They had one son, John (1816-1891). Mrs. Benson notes: "John Butson was born and lived all his life in Braunton. At his marriage he was a Mason but he was later listed in the Census returns as a shopkeeper, and in 1861 as a farmer of 25 acres."

John Butson married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth LAMPREY (1818-1842) 7 Apr 1839. They had one son, William Lamprey BUTSON (1840-1914; labourer), who wed Eliza BUDD (1840-1890), by whom he had 7 children:

    1. John bap 3 Feb 1867; d 1939
    2. Mary Eliza bap 18 Oct 1868
    3. Lucy bap 4 Sep 1870; d 1939; bur 3 Jan 1940

    5. Ann bap 15 Nov 1874
    6. William bap 16 Sep 1877
    7. Elizabeth bap 22 Aug 1880

John Butson married again, to Elizabeth BEALE (1813-1891) 8 Jun or Aug 1845, by whom he had 5 children:

    1. Mary Elizabeth bap 10 Jan 1847
    2. Eliza Ann bap 21 Jan 1849
    3. John bap 14 Sep 1851; d 1867
    4. Catherine Prudence b 1855; m Alexander BAKER; son:
      • John Butson BAKER (1887-1949) m Edith Mary WILLIAMS (1882-1971); dau:
        • Betty Mary Maria BAKER b 1914; m Thomas CLARKE; son:
          • Peter CLARKE b 1953
    5. Matthew (1858-1937; labourer in 1896; lamplighter in 1898). Mrs. Benson writes: "Matthew Butson was Braunton's last lamplighter - the man who went round lighting the gas street lights." (His photo and tools are now on display in the well-done local museum. (WJ)). Matthew married Maria Jane (WILDREN? (WJ)) (1855-1918; bur 14 Oct 1918 Braunton). They had 6 children:
      1. William Wildern bap 29 Dec 1890; d 1906
      2. Elsie May b 2 Dec 1892
      3. Walter John bap 6 Jan 1895

U.S.A.

  1. William R. Butson (Champaign, Ill. 1982) wrote that he is the son of William D. BUTSON (son of William and Bertha (MILLER) Butson of Kelly Lake, Minnesota; m Isabel STUART). His father had a sister, Joyce. (See item 5 below.)

  2. Tom Butson's item under Australia and New Zealand is also relevant to the U.S.

  3. Lois Butson Shandeor (Noank, Conn. 1980) wrote that her grandfather Joseph Butson came to America in 1891 from Fowey, Cornwall.

  4. Vernon Butson (Fergus Falls, Minn. 1980) sent his family's records. He formerly owned a funeral home in Trach, Minn. and Walnut Grove, Minn. for 21 years, selling in 1976 to move to Fergus Falls, where he is in the soft water business.

His great-grandfather Thomas Butson reportedly came to America from Silverwill, Cornwall in 1848, with his wife Susan Jane RICHARDS and son Thomas. However, Vernon's grandfather, James, was their 3rd (of 8) child and was born 1847; so there is a question. The family settled at Vinegar Hill, Illinois, south of Hazel Green, Wisconsin and Platteville, Wis. (and near Galena, Illinois -- all of these sites lured Cornish miners in the 1840's (WJ)). There are many, many descendants of Thomas and Susan Jane.

Vernon's grandfather James Butson married Hannah Francis LEE and migrated from Platteville, Wis. by covered wagon to Lyon County, Minnesota in 1872 (about the time the railroads were going through Minn. and some of my Chicago German ancestors moved to New Ulm (WJ)). They had a "tree claim" on 160 acres 2 1/2 miles N.W. of Marshall, Minn.

Vernon's father John Thomas Butson (1882-1961) was youngest of 4 children. He married Emma Moline OSTUL in 1918. They farmed in Lyon County most of their lives. They had two children: Wallace J. Butson of Wells, Minn. and Vernon L. Butson.

Vernon has four children: Mary Lea (m LOVING), Gregory Keith, Lynn Ellen, and Alan John. His brother has six children.

  5. Vernon Butson (Fergus Falls, Minn. 1980) has also provided information on two other U.S. BUTSON lines. He contacted the Butsons of Kelly Lake, Minn. (See item 1 above.) and was told they migrated from Germany. He also contacted a Butson family in Houston, Texas and was told they had migrated to Texas from Louisiana.

  6. Marion Parson (Bowmanville, Ont., Canada 1981) wrote that two branches of descendants of Nicholas Butson (see Canada section) have not been heard from since 1938, when they were in Michigan. They are Herbert Russell ORCHARD (m Amy; has dau Reta & son Floyd; last contact at Richmond, Mich.) and his sister Gertrude POTTER (had dau Gladys (m CONLEY) & 3 sons; last contact Brown City, Mich.). They are not on the mailing list. Has anyone had contact with them?

  7. Jeanette L. Wright (Waterloo, Iowa 1981) wrote of a Franklin County, Iowa BUTSON family. Percy BUTSON lived on a farm between Hansell and Hampton, Iowa. He had two children: Kathryn (age about 53 or 54 in 1981; m Alvin UHL; lives Coldwater, Mich.) and Keith (age about 58 or 59 in 1981; lives Asheville, N. Car.). The family lived on the Iowa farm from at least as early as 1928 to at least as recently as 1946. Percy and his wife have died.

COMPUTER I purchased an Osborne 1 Microcomputer in December 1982. It is already loaded with research reports for my part-time genealogy research business. Now it also has the mailing lists for the Newsletter. Soon I plan to begin entering the mounds of data I have accumulated. Maybe then I will be able to publish the sort of comprehensive book some of you have asked for ... a Butson Encyclopedia. It will still be a lot of work, but it will be a lot easier to organize everything and view it from different perspectives. Here's hoping.

Please note the following regarding e-mail.
  1. This really is a low priority for me right now. So I may take quite a while to answer your e-mail. But someday, I will get around to it.
  2. I am NOT planning to publish another issue.
  3. Please include "Butson" in the subject of your note, since I am receiving e-mail on several different subjects, and this will help me to sort things out.
  4. Once you have read all of the above, please send comments to WWJohnston01@yahoo.com.
