Solomon and Humphrey did not own the cottage, they had what was called a 3 lives lease on the house and land. The property was owned by Sir John Colman Rashleigh of the Manor of Prideaux. Rack rent, which was based on the property value, was paid on the four quarter days. these were Lady Day (March 25), Midsummer Day (June 24), Michaelmas (September 29) and Christmas (December 25). These dates enabled me to pin down Soloman's departure on the Clio.

I have transcribed the page for Michaelmas 1840. By Michaelmas 1841, Solomon's name had a line drawn through it and was replaced by Matthew Keam.

I have attached the transcription and copy of an article about leases which give an idea of how the 3 lives lease worked.
