Lancelot Hore - Will dated 28 Jan 1672/3 and 30 Oct 1674 - Transcription

by Wesley Johnston, first posted 12 Aug 2015, updated 14 Aug 2015

I have separately posted a PDF file of the image of Lancelot Hore's will on Ancestry at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12001386/person/27346944414/media/1?pgnum=1&pg=0&pgpl=pid|pgNum

The PDF file consists of three pages:

  1. The 30 October 1674 probate of the will. This page is in Latin, most of which I am unable to transcribe.
  2. The 28 Jan 1672/3 will in its entirety.
  3. The 3 Apr 1674 inventory and appraisal of the late Lancelot Hore's goods and chattles.

The exact date of his death and burial is not known, since his burial record has apparently not survived.

There are four sections to the following transcription, separated by dashed lines. The first three sections correspond to the three pages in the PDF file. The fourth section contains my notes about the transcription.

Transcription Notes by Wesley Johnston

My goal in doing the transcription is to transcribe the hand-written text exactly as it was written, without corrections or changes. I considered using square brackets within the text to complete abbreviations, but I decided against that, since I really want the transcription to be exactly as the original was written. So the following are notes on specific words on specific lines. Thanks to my cousin, Peter Keam in Australia, who proof-read my first draft and offered corrections.

By line number, here are my notes on the transcription.

          2    P[AR]ISH

          4    sound and P[ER]FECT memory

          6    MANOR is modern MANNER

8    FRŌ. WHEN’S is modern FROM WHENCE

          9    MANOR is modern MANNER

15    not sure what the word after Down is

18    and ye JOYE S[AI]D house – not entirely sure about joye

20    not sure what the close is called

22    ?TREOLE? – very unsure of this transcription

24    not sure what the close is called (same as the one in line 28)

26    PARTHEHARVEY appears to be one word, probably a place name – not sure of this transcription

28    not sure what the close is called (same as the one in line 24)

29    W[IT]H – not sure if this is the correct intended meaning of the abbreviation

38    ?CLEMENS? – not sure this is the correct transcription of the surname

       41    P[AR]ISH

       42    DEC[EAS]ED or maybe DEC[LAR]ED

       49    TENEM[EN]T
