Nichollas Grose (circa 1576-1643) and Jane (? -1674)
“Nichollas Grose was probably baptized in Luxulyan Parish Church in 1576. At the age of about 27 he married Jane (no surname given) there on 4th February 1603/4. Nichollas and Jane lived at Lockengate, a hamlet some 3 1/2 miles north west of the Parish Church and about 3 miles south of Lanivet Parish Church. They had 5 children, Robart (1605), William (1609), George (circa 1617), Walter (1619) and Ambrose (1624), but the second son, William, who was baptized in Luxulyan Parish Church on 26th March 1609 died and was buried there on 28th May aged just 2 months.
“Nicholas was a farmer and seems to have been comfortably off. The inventory attached to his will and taken after he died in 1643, puts a value on his goods, including cattle and crops of (pound) 60.2.2d equivalent to about (pound) 4,600 at 1997 prices. The mention of a feather bed and the value placed on it confirms his "comfortably off" situation. However, like most of the population of the time, he was unable to read or write.
“Nichollas died, aged about 67, and was buried on 24th December 1643 in Luxulyan Parish Churchyard. He left a will (1643), made 6 months before he died, for which probate was granted on 18th January 1643/4 to his sons and executors George Grose and Ambrose Grose. Retaining the original spelling, he left his wife, Jane, “one kowe, one tow year oold heafer, one mare, tenn sheep, the best crock and best pann, one caldron, and the pann which was her oune, three platter, one oulden bol and other smale things”. He also gave her the living to Lockengate, “his one beed furnished and one but of beds”.
“Jane outlived him by 30 years and died and was buried on 9th February 1673/4 in Luxulyan Parish Churchyard."
