William Phillips, father of 1686/7 Lanlivery William Phillips

Research note by Wesley Johnston, last updated 16 Dec 2013 (corrected 13 Feb 1685/6 marriage URL and reference)

William Phillips was baptized 1 Jan 1686/7 (1 Jan 1686 old style year ending in March = 1 Jan 1687 new style year ending in December) at Lanlivery, Cornwall. His parents were William Phillips and Joan his wife. The image of this baptism can be seen at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11897-173801-94

The most likely marriage for William and Joan was the Luxulyan marriage 13 Feb 1685/6. The record of this marriage does not give Joan's maiden name. The image of this marriage can be seen at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11664-15412-35 (6th marriage under "Anno Dom 1685")

The most likely baptism for Joan's husband William was at Lanlivery 3 Mar 1652/3, son of Richard and Jane Philp. The image of this baptism can be seen at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11897-167570-97

If this 1652/3 William was the groom in the 1685/6 marriage, he would have been about 35 years old. Thus it seems likely that he may have been married before. And there was a Bodmin marriage of a William Phillips to Honer Beard 14 Feb 1674/5 that was nearby and would be about the right age for the first marriage of the 1652/3 William. There was also a 10 Jul 1673 marriage at St. Teath of William Phillips to Ann Dagge, but this is not as close as Bodmin. (These marriages are from the Cornwall OPC web database.) There is no burial record for Ho* Ph* as any variant of Honer Phillips. So the conjecture that William had been married before is unverifiable from what I have found thus far.

There are two possible Lanlivery burials that could be the William Phillips who was the father of the 1686/7. One was buried as William Philp 18 May 1727. The other was buried as William Phillips 30 Jan 1729. (source Cornwall OPC)
