OBIT: THE SEATTLE TIMES, Wed, Sept 11, 1957

DEATH TAKES MRS. HARRY H. KOUTECKY: Mrs. Rhoda Ellen Mitchell Koutecky, 82, one of the organizers of Seattle Chapter No. 1, Gold Star Mother's, died yesterday after a short illness at her home, 11715 Fremont Ave. Mrs. Koutecky was the first president of the Gold Star Mother's chapter and a member of the national association. Mrs. Koutecky was born in Iowa. She came to Washington in 1900. She lived in Elma, Gray's Harbor county, before she came to Seattle in 1921. Mrs. Koutecky was a past noble grand of the Loyal Rebekah Lodge, a life member of the auxiliary of Seattle Post No. 1, American Legion, and a member of the auxiliary of the James Eagleson Post No. 1410, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are her husband, Harry H.; a son, Don Poff; a daughter, Mrs. Cloe Anderson, and a stepson, Harry Koutecky, all of Seattle; a stepdaughter, Miss Marie Koutecky, Berkeley, California; two sisters, Mrs. Alma White, Shelton, and Mrs. Laura Conrad, Hart, Mich; two granddaughters and four great-granddaughters. Funeral arrangements are being made at Mittelstadt's Ballard Mortuary.

According to the Ellis 1910 History of Jackson Co, pg 372, Wm Phillips, John Clark, and Isaac Mitchell families arrived in Jackson Co, Iowa, in May, 1837. ISAAC MITCHELL took up a claim in the southwest quarter of the City which he sold in 1839 to Wm. Current . Wm. Phillip's claim was in the northeast quarter of the city. John Clark's claim was in the eastern part of town. Wm Phillips as born in Hamilton co,Ohio, was married in Ohio, and 2 of his children were born in Ohio, 3 in Michigan, 1 in Indiana, and 2 in Jackson Co, Iowa. Apparently the Phillips left from LaPorte, Indiana. There is no record of how many people were in this wagon train. Ben Hanson came to Jackson Co earlier in the year 1838, and took up a claim and built a log cabin for the family. He was married to Laura Grimes, who with their 3 daughters, Mariam, Orline, and Almira, followed in September with the Fairbrother family. She became sick on the way and the Fairbrother's left their train and hurried on to Maquoketa, thus they arrived on September 10, and Laura died the 17th. Mariam was only 8 years old and helped Ben look after her sisters. Tragedy again struck in 1839 when the cabin caught fire and Almira perished. They moved to Monmouth Twp, Iowa after that, and he married LOUISA MITCHELL. Ben and daughter Emma are buried in the Pence Cemetery, Monmouth Iowa.

Grace Halihan, genealogist, stated that it was doubtful that any information was available on Isaac's property holdings in Jackson Co, Iowa. Land did not come up for sale until 1845, and they were simply squatters. Grace was Curator of the Maquoketa, Iowa, Museum.

Notes for LOUISA BLAMER:
Up until now no wedding date has turned up for Louisa and Isaac Mitchell Jr. I have researched Delaware Co, and Licking Co thoroughly, without success. If they were married in Licking Co, no proof of their marriage would be available today because there was a Court House fire in 1875 which destroyed all the records for marriages before that time.

Louisa married Alfred Baughman after the death of her first husband Isaac, most likely in Paulding Co, Ohio, because that is where Louisa was living when Isaac died, and where Alfred's daughter Alma was born, in 1888, in Benton Twp. Louisa and Alfred moved with Louisa's brother George Blamer, to Walkerville, Leavitt Twp, Oceana Co, Michigan, taking the youngest Mitchell children and Alfred's daughter Alma with them. Alfred walked away from the farm in Oceana Co, Michigan one day, and was never heard from again. There is no knowledge of what happened to him, and he does not appear in any Michigan or Ohio census in 1900 or beyond that time--he may have died, or moved westward. At any rate, no one ever heard from him again.

Family tradition is that Louisa was a very small woman, about 5' tall, weighing about 90 lbs. It is said that after her husband Isaac Mitchell Jr. died she took her young sons into the woods and cut timber to make a living for her family. It is also a possibility that after Alfred Baughman left her she did the same thing in Oceana Co, Mich, in order to make a living. Because of this experience in logging and lumbering her younger sons remained in that occupation most of their lives--some moving to Washington State to continue in that line of work.

Louisa died as a result of a bee sting. The bee stung her beside an ear, and she developed blood poisoning. Dr's didn't know much about allergies at that time. There were other family members with bee sting allergies. Her death certificate shows that she died from pneumonia, and symptoms that appear to be an allergic reaction. She died August 17, 1904, and is buried in the Carpenter Cemetery, which is 1 mile East of Walkerville, Michigan, 1st farm on the south side of the road.

ELMA MAN KILLS SELF BY HANGING:
A. J. Mitchell, who lived on the west end of Young St, in Elma, committed suicide early Saturday morning, by hanging himself in the wood-shed at his home. The body was discovered by his brother L. T. Mitchell, and cut down by him, while there was still a spark of life left, but not knowing what to do he ran for help and before he could get a doctor on the scene the brother was dead. The two brothers lived in a small house together, batching it. Saturday morning L. T. Mitchell went away and was gone perhaps a half hour, he says, and when he came back to the house he found his brother hanging in the woodshed. He at once cut him down, and the man gasped once, or twice, but while the brother ran for help, he died. Despondency over family troubles is given as the cause for the deed. Mr. Mitchell was about 52 years of age and had been a resident of this section for the past 16 years. He leaves a brother, L. T. Mitchell, a sister, Mrs. S. W. White, and a wife, who now lives in Portland, Oregon. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the parlors of the Whiteside Undertaking Company, and interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

ELMA RANCHMAN TAKES OWN LIFE: A. J. Mitchell found in Wood-shed by brother: Elma, Feb 26, (special), Andrew Jackson Mitchell, 52 years old, a ranch-worker who has made his home in or near Elma for the past 16 years, committed suicide this morning about 8:30 by hanging himself with a rope from a rafter of the woodshed at his home on West Young Street. He was found while still alive by his brother Leonard Mitchell, with whom he lives. He was cut down and a physician summoned, but death came before the physician arrived. Mitchell is said by his brother to have been despondent for some time, though he had said nothing about taking his life. Neither he or his brother had been employed for several months. The dead man is survived by his brother, and a sister, both of Elma. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 O'Clock from the Whiteside Chapel in Elma, Rev. Dunlap of the Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be given in the Odd Fellow's Cemetery.

John's grandparents, Isaac (Sr.) and Emma (Lippincott) Mitchell, moved their family from New Jersey westward. They moved their family from New Jersey sometime after the birth of their daughter Louisa in 1822. There is a large gap between children, and I am assuming that some died along the way to Ohio, or in New Jersey before they left, as I do not know an exact time that they left for Ohio. The next child born to this couple was John Francis Mitchell, born in Ohio in 1834. In 1836 Isaac Mitchell (Jr), father of John Willis Mitchell, was born in Indiana. And then, on May 27, 1837, this family arrived by wagon train in what is now Maquoketa, Jackson Co, Iowa, as one of the first 3 families to settle the area. They had left La Porte, Indiana, made the trek across Indiana, and then on into the wilderness that later became Iowa. They had with them the following children: John and William Lippincott Mitchell, both born 1820 in New Jersey, Louisa born 1822 in New Jersey, and then John Francis born 1834, Ohio--location unknown, and Isaac (Jr) born 1836 in Indiana,--location unknown.
It is known that Isaac (Jr) and his parents moved from Jackson Co, Iowa sometime after the 1856 census for Jackson Co, Iowa. Isaac Sr sold his farm, and moved back to Ohio, leaving the other family members in Iowa. The 1860 census for Delaware Twp, Delaware Co, Ohio is quite faded and difficult to read, but I believe that the Isaac listed there as the head of the household was Isaac (Sr) with his wife Emma, and son Isaac (Jr). Isaac (Jr), while in Ohio, met and married his wife Louisa Blamer who had been born in Monroe Twp, Licking Co, Ohio, and had lived there her entire life, although her extended family was located in both Licking Co and Delaware Co. Their marriage date has not survived the courthouse fire in 1875, but it is assumed that they married about 1864 in Licking Co. Their first child John Willis Mitchell was born Sept 30, 1865, in Licking Co. They then moved back to Iowa, this time to Jones Co, with Isaac's parents, where 3 more Mitchell children were born between 1868-1874. No death dates or burial locations have been found for Isaac (Sr) and Emma, but I assume they are buried in Iowa, probably in either Jackson Co or Jones Co. 3 more Mitchell children were born to Isaac and Louisa Mitchell in Ohio--in Licking Co, then in Delaware Co, and the last one in Paulding Co, Ohio.
Isaac Mitchell (Jr) died at a very young age in the year 1884, in Paulding Co, Ohio. He had suffered from Consumption for some time, and died at the age of 48, leaving his wife with a young family of 7 children to care for. She remarried a few years later to Alfred Baughman. They had 1 child in 1888 in Paulding Co, Ohio, and then moved to Walkerville, Oceana Co, Michigan, taking their daughter Alma Baughman, and all of the Mitchell children, except for John Willis Mitchell. John had married Clara Shaneyfelt January 25, 1886, in Paulding Co, Ohio. John and Clara remained behind in Ohio, and did not actually move to Michigan until after 1922, and then they moved to the other side of the state, near Flint.
John Willis Mitchell was fair complected, had light sandy colored hair, and stood about 5' 6" tall. He weighed about 125-130 lbs. He often sported a handlebar moustache in his younger days. Because his wife Clara was so short he often looked like a giant next to her in photos. Over the course of his lifetime John Willis was moved from Licking Co, Ohio where he was born, to Jones Co, Iowa. After returning to Ohio he lived in Delaware Co, and then Paulding Co. Some of the towns he lived in were Tipton, Haviland, Paulding, and Van Wert. He moved frequently after he married Clara Isabelle Shaneyfelt Jan 25, 1886, in Paulding Co, Ohio, always renting his land and home, never purchasing, but generally remaining in Paulding Co most of the time, or in Van Wert Co.
John tried various occupations in his lifetime. He was a farmer, learning about it from his family during his early years, before marriage, and for a time after he married. In 1892 John was in Paulding Co, Ohio, and was running a brick and tile business with his brother in law, William A. Shaneyfelt. He tried being a merchant, and also running a hardware and dry goods store. His daughter Amy used to tell of sneaking into the store when her parents weren't looking for a pickle from the barrel.
The second store he had was built in 1905 and was still standing in 1980 in Tipton, Paulding Co, Ohio. In 1910 John was still in that business when his grandson Paul was born in an apartment over that very store. The store has since been condemned and torn down. John also was in the banking business for a while, which was not very lucrative for him, and he didn't do well. With the depression coming on he needed to find other work, and once again returned to farming, and odd jobs.
Eventually John and Clara moved to Flint, Genesee Co, Michigan, where he took employment with Buick Motor Division of General Motors. This move to Flint took place sometime after 1922 when Clara's father died. In 1922 they were living on Blaine St. in Van Wert Co, Ohio, because there was a comment on Clara being called to her father's funeral. It comes from the Twice Weekly Bulletin of Van Wert, and states "Mrs. J. W. Mitchell of Blaine Street was called to Scott Wednesday by the death of her father, William Shanefeldt, of Portland, Indiana, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. Hanna. He was 86 years of age."
John had a series of strokes which took his speech, but didn't keep him from walking around, sometime after 1934 or 1935. His wife Clara often spoke of how worried she would be when he would be missing for any length of time, as he tended to wander off on his own. He couldn't speak, and she was afraid that something would happen to him. He was bigger than she was at 4' 9" tall, and she couldn't make him stay at home. As soon as she turned her back, off he would go. John had his final stroke, and died Feb. 27, 1937. He is buried in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Flint, Genesee Co, Michigan. His wife Clara survived him by 32 years.

"J. W. Mitchell, a leading young citizen of Benton township, was born in Licking County, Ohio, on the 30th of September, 1865, the son of Isaac and Louisa (Blamer) Mitchell. He was reared in the county of his nativity, obtaining his education there. His parents, in 1882, removed to Benton township, where the father died two years later. The mother afterward married and now resides in Michigan. J. W. Mitchell followed farming for some time, and on the 4th of March, 1891, in connection with W.A.Shaneyfelt, purchased the title and brick factory of George Spice, which they are at present conducting. Mr. Mitchell and Miss Clara Shaynfelt became husband and wife in 1886, and unto their union two bright children have been born. They are Isaac and Estella Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell, who is the daughter of William Shaynfelt, is a lady possessing social qualities. She is very popular in the community of her residence. Her husband, who shares her popularity, is a republican in politics."

Clara was affiliated with the following churches in her lifetime: United Brethren, Methodist, and Presbyterian. She was a devout woman, and had a strong belief in God, always trying to steer her children in that same direction. Clara was named Clara Belle, or Clara Isabelle, and in her younger days she was sometimes called "Belle" by her family. Clara's mother died when she was 16 years old and, as the oldest daughter, she helped raise the children left at home after her mother Elisabeth's early death at that age of 39. She married John Willis Mitchell when she was age 17, and he was 21. Her father went on to marry 3 more times, and all were unhappy marriages that ended in divorce. Grandmother Clara used to tell about the day she married John Mitchell. " It was a cold, crisp, snowy, January day. As the horses pulled the sleigh through the snow on the way to the church, there were white doves flying up in the sky, and light fluffy snow." She always remarked on what a beautiful day it was. She told that story often, and with much happiness. Below is a recording of that day in her life:

She was a strong disciplinarian with her children. I remember my dad and Uncle Lowell got into an argument in front of her one time at a family gathering. She got up, went around the table and twisted Uncle Lowell's earlobe, and told him to be quiet. And then, she did the same thing to my dad. I thought that was hilarious, at the time. Another time they were scrapping, and fighting, and they fell on a Christmas tree, and broke many of the bulbs on it. Grandma was there pointing her finger, and telling them to behave. It always made me laugh to see her do such things because she was so tiny. But, those were her sons, and she was their mother, and she made sure they behaved themselves, even when they were adults.
A funny story she used to tell was about a tornado that touched down on the farm she grew up on. Her family rushed to the root cellar for safety, and all were saved. The storm did not take the house, but uprooted a lot of trees and shrubs. (She called it a hurricane.) She said that they had turkeys that her mother was raising for sale, and had plans for that money. She was going to sell the birds as well as their down and feathers, that could be used to stuff pillows, feather ticks, and mattresses. Unfortunately the turkeys didn't go to the root cellar with the family, and all were dead in the yard, their feathers plucked off of them by the high winds. She said that the yard looked like it had snowed from all the feathers.
Somewhere in time Clara adopted the Gibson Girl hairdo, and never gave it up. Even up into her later years she was still combing her long hair 100 times every night, and then in the morning it would go up into a bun on the back of her head. She used to take the hair in her brush and place it in a "hair receiver" on the dresser--a small footed dish with a lid that had a hole in the top. That loose hair often found itself back in her hairdo the very next day, stuffed under her bun, to make her hair look fuller. She was fond of black, having grown up at the end of the Victorian era, and wore big hats and high buttoned shoes until she could no longer find them. Then she still found lace up high shoes, as close to her high buttoned shoes as she could get.
She wasn't very tall at 4' 9". In her younger days her hair was black. She had very dark brown eyes, so dark that the pupils hardly showed. They were an unusual shape--sort of almond shaped. She wore corsets with whalebone in them that I tried on now and then, and pantaloons, or bloomers as she called them, when she could find them. Nothing else was appropriate in her mind. Grandma didn't do the 20th century very well when it came to fashion. She would comment on my Bermuda shorts now and then and say I was showing "too much leg." In her mind dresses were worn by women, not pants, and they should reach the floor, or come as close as possible, to be modest. One of her favorite things was a ring given to her by her husband on the occasion of their son Lester's birth. It was a garnet and pearl ring, and a great treasure to her. She often wore a strand of black jet beads, and earrings to match. I also remember some hair jewelry that had been made of the hair of some long passed family member, but that has been lost over time.
One of her most favorite things to do was to sew, and do needlework. She often sat at the treadle sewing machine and made little dresses, or did her mending. She taught me to sew on that machine. In her younger days she had made quilts, linens, doilies, and all her household items. She did the type of needlework her German ancestors did--Schwalm, Hardanger, and so forth. She could crochet, tat and smock, and I learned those skills from her as well. She used to say that in her young days she made all of her children's clothing by hand, without a machine.
One of my fondest memories is of lying on the feather tick under thick quilts, and grandma talking to me about the crazy quilt on the bed. She knew who had worn each piece of clothing in the quilt and had a story about every one of them. I especially loved the stories about her babies. She told of the time she was standing in a metal doorway when lightening struck, and her baby was stillborn. She had a quilt made from baby dresses that I loved to talk about with her because it brought them to life for me. She loved everyone of those children, and told endless stories about them.
Grandma used quilts to talk about Heaven and Bible verses. I soon learned that there were different quilt blocks that represented various things such as the Tree of Life pattern, and Jacob's Ladder pattern. There was always a story with each pattern, and something it represented. We had a "Kansas Troubles" quilt that was made to express the problems Kansas had over the slavery issue, and a Double Wedding Ring quilt also.
She used to love to sing, especially hymns. Her favorite hymns were "Amazing Grace", "Rock of Ages", and "In the Garden". She only had about a 3rd grade education collectively, but was a very intelligent and well read person. She said she was educated like Abraham Lincoln--"by littles"--a little bit here and a little bit there, whenever she could get to school. In her day it was often more important for a child to be home to help with chores than to be in school. But, her father believed in education, so he attempted to have his children in school as much as he could. She never missed her evening newspaper, and stayed up on all the latest happenings in politics. She taught me to read and understand phonics long before I attended school.
When my husband Tom and I started to date he was surprised by her clear mind at such an advanced age. He asked her about her life, and mentioned that she had most likely seen many events take place over her lifetime. He asked her if she thought, since man had gone into space, that a man would ever walk on the moon. She responded in this manner, "Of course man will walk on the moon! That is the final frontier." She then went on to talk about the first flight of the Wright brothers and the invention of the car, and many other things that had developed during her long lifetime. Walking on the moon seemed like a very small thing to her. She spoke of traveling across this country in the back of a wagon, when she was a child, and experiencing untamed land. In her words, it was "only a matter of time before someone tamed Outer Space as well."
Grandma was a staunch republican, and always voted in every election, going to the polls until close to her 100th birthday. Someone in line made a comment on her being so old, at the polls, so she refused to vote that way from that point on. After that time she voted by absentee ballot--but she never quit voting, until her life came to an end. Voting privileges were hard fought for by women in her day, and she believed in exercising that right.
When she turned 100 years of age Oct 30, 1968, she received a letter from the President, who happened to be Lyndon Baines Johnson, a Democrat. Grandma was not fond of that as she felt that he was not just congratulating her, but wanted her vote. There was no way she was going to vote for a Democrat! And, she wouldn't listen when everyone tried to convince her of what an honor it was to receive mail from the President. Her reaction was to put the letter in the wastebasket, and forget about it. I was not allowed to save that message, unfortunately. Below are some of the others she received.

CENTENARIAN PLANS TO MAINTAIN RECORD:
A Flint woman who has voted for every Republican Presidential candidate since Warren G. Harding in 1920 will be 100 years old Wednesday. Mrs. Clara Mitchell lives with her daughter, Mrs. Amy Dickenson, at the Elms Trailer Park, 2801 S. Dort Hwy. She has two sons, Lester, 722 Huron St., and Lowell, 1304 Forest Hill Ave. She had not voted before 1920 when she was 48--because women were not allowed to vote before then in the United States. Her husband, John, died in 1937, 14 years after they had moved to Flint. He was a Buick employee. Mrs. Mitchell doesn't like today's popular music and fondly remembers the romantic duets of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald. "Hard work and the old-fashioned virtues" she says, are responsible for her long live. Mrs. Mitchell is tolerant of today's shorter dresses. "It's a shame I had to wear mine down to my ankles," she said, reminiscing about her younger days. She things young men look cute in long hair, too. (*these last 2 statements were taken out of context because Grandma didn't approve of short skirts and long hair--she said it was a sign of rebellion. This reporter twisted her words a bit.) Mrs. Mitchell has maintained a life-long interest in political affairs. She doesn't want the voting age lowered to 18. She thinks that 21 is a better age to understand important matters. Mrs. Mitchell is worried about the war in Vietnam. "I don't know why people have to kill each other, " she said. Her father was a farmer in Western Indiana. Her first school was a log cabin. Mrs. Mitchell is optimistic about today's generation. Young people, she feels, will help to improve the country. And, she said, she going to vote Republican again, in next Tuesday's general election.

CENTENARIAN'S RELATIVES LISTED:
An article in The Journal Tuesday failed to list several relatives of Mrs. Clara Mitchell, who is celebrating her 100th birthday today. They are: Two sons: George, Rochester, and Ervin, Mesa, Arizona; two daughters: Mrs. Estella Gudakunst of Spencerville, Ohio, and Mrs. Gladys Callahan, Azusa, California; 18 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mitchell lives with another daughter, Mrs. Amy Dickenson, at the Elm's Trailer Park, 2801 S. Dort Hwy. She has 2 other sons, Lester and Lowell, both of Flint.

She always preached the virtues of voting, especially to women, as she had not had that privilege in her younger days. She believed in education and tried to talk her grandchildren into going to college, if she could. She had no greater joy than on the day one of her grandchildren graduated from high school, and better yet, from college.
She didn't believe in drinking, but did keep some "spirits" in her closet, for health purposes, dosing herself on occasion, when she became ill, with whiskey, honey, and lemon juice. She was very health conscious and took vitamins regularly. She never complained about her aches and pains, although she must have had them. When she would kiss me she always left a wet spot on my cheek where her nose would rest. She inherited the perpetual hay fever, allergies, and weak immune system, that came down through the Shaneyfelt family. And she also was hypoglycemic, and needed to eat frequently. Unfortunately, she passed those things on to her children, and grandchildren, genetically. At the end of her life she suffered from several small strokes, also a Shaneyfelt legacy, and angina pain connected with her heart. Grandma always had a handkerchief tucked in her sleeve to stop her constantly dripping nose.
Once, during the summer of 1968, I took grandma to the Dr. as no one else could do so. It was the first summer after I started teaching school. I had those months off, so I volunteered to take her. The nurse called for "the mother of Clara Mitchell." I looked around to see if there could possibly be another Clara Mitchell in the room, but no one else got up. So, I went to the desk and told the nurse that I thought she needed to read the dates more carefully. She couldn't believe that in 1968 she was looking at a woman who was born in 1868, and would soon be 100 years old. The fact that someone thought I was her mother kept Grandma chuckling for several days.
I once asked her for her recipe for noodles. She always made the best hot buttered noodles, served German style with bread crumbs mixed in. Unfortunately, she never listed quantities or gave instructions, so all I got was a list of ingredients. I did try to do what she told me to do, but what I made was nothing like her noodles. Her recipe is as follows:

sugar
salt
Pour flour on a floured board, make a well, put in the egg and water, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of sugar, mix, and roll thin. Cut into pieces and hang to dry.

She lived with various family members after the death of her husband in 1937, and eventually took up permanent residence with her son Lester's family. She and I shared a room almost from the time I came home from the hospital on January 13, 1945, until I left home at the age of 20. After that date she lived with Aunt Amy at the Elm's Trailer Park, until her death in 1969. She did go to California to stay with her daughter Gladys for a few months, at one time, when Gladys had surgery, but came back to our household to live. During those years I had the privilege of knowing her well, learning needlework skills and how to read from her. She was always willing to read a book with me, or help with schoolwork. Grandma lived to be nearly 101 years of age, dying in May, just 5 months before her birthday. As mentioned before in another place, she survived her husband by 32 years.

Mrs. Clara I. Mitchell, 100, who said she voted for every Republican Presidential candidate since women gained the franchise in 1920, died Tuesday in Hurley Hospital. She lived in Flint for 46 years, most recently at 2801 S. Dort Hwy. Mrs. Mitchell's husband, John, who was a Buick Employee, died in 1937. Services will be at 10am, Saturday, in brown Funeral Home, with burial in Grace Lawn Cemetery. She leaves three daughters: Mrs. Glenn Callahan, Azusa California; Mrs. Earl Gudakunst, Spencerville, Ohio;
and Mrs. Phillip Dickenson, Flint; four sons: Ervin, Mesa Arizona; George, Rochester, Michigan; Lester and Lowell, both of Flint; 17 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren.

This child was buried in the Dealy Cemetery, Benton Twp, Paulding Co, Ohio, near his grandfather, Isaac Mitchell, and possibly near the first child born to Clara and John Mitchell.

Estella was a sweet little lady, but much taller than her mother, in her mind. She was at least 4' 10 1/2" tall, and was proud of being taller than her mother, as was her sister Amy. Estella was born in Monmouth, Jackson Co, Iowa, when her family lived there for a time near other Mitchell family members.
She married Earl Gudakunst at the age of 20 in Paulding Co, Ohio, in the home of her parents. She was a very strong Christian, and had great spiritual beliefs. I once spoke out of turn concerning something in the Bible and got corrected on the spot! She married Earl and lived out the rest of her days in Spencerville, Ohio. She and Earl never had children of their own.
Uncle Earl and Aunt Estella lived in a little farm house that had at one time been out in the country, but with the changing of the city of Spencerville, ended up extremely close to the railroad tracks. It was an old style home with high ceilings, and a wood stove. Uncle Earl was proud of his strawberry patch which covered much of the back yard, and was a wonderful place in the spring. The house had a wrap around porch with rockers and a swing seat on it. I loved to go out there and sit on the swing and read a book, in the summer. It was a most pleasant place.
Of course, I didn't care for the outhouse very much--too many bees and flies for my comfort. And, Uncle Earl used to say that there were scary creatures lurking under the cabbages in the garden, and I felt that I had to run to the outhouse to keep away from them. He enjoyed teasing me very much. Going there to visit always made me glad to come back home to indoor plumbing. As that house aged the walls seemed to become thinner. The same flowered wallpaper was on the walls for many years, and I always thought for sure that the flowers were in a different pattern after a train would pass through. The house was so close to the railroad tracks it seemed to me as if the train was in the house sometimes.
Once when we were visiting, and my husband was along, Aunt Estella couldn't get the back door open. We went there so Tom could do some work for her on her house. They were small things, like unsticking the door, which she couldn't manage to open because she was so tiny. She had locked the door with an old padlock. After Tom shaved off some of the door, and it would close properly with it's old key, Aunt Estella gave the padlock to Tom as a gift for helping her. He still has it in his workshop, hanging in a place of honor.
Towards the end of her lifetime she came to Michigan for a time to stay with her sister Amy and her mother Clara. They were living in a trailer park on Dort Highway at the time. She lived there only a short few months, and then we took her back home as she didn't want to be away from her home for long. She eventually began to lose her ability to reason and remember, and was seen by neighbors wandering the neighborhood in her nightgown. So, Aunt Amy went to stay with her for a time, and eventually placed her in a nursing home, where she passed away a short time later.
When she passed away it was Aunt Amy's duty to go and clean out her home. She went down with her brothers--I believe that Lowell and my dad, Lester, were there helping as well. I know for sure that Uncle Lowell was there helping as he showed me her wedding dress that she had saved for so many years. she was very proud of it because she made it herself from white lawn fabric, and there were a lot of tiny pintucks in the front of it. After they were done with the cleaning the city condemned the house, and tore it down. Estella is buried in the Spencerville Cemetery, next to her husband Earl.

Ervin Mitchell was born August 1, 1892, in Benton Twp, Paulding Co, Ohio, according the the book, "Early Birth's of Paulding Co, Ohio, Vol 2". He was a jolly person, and always laughing and teasing. He lived in Chicago, Illinois in his later life, with his wife Ethel, and their little Dachshund dog. We didn't see Uncle Ervin very often because of the distance, but when we did he came with presents to give, and we had lots of fun with him. I remember he was like the Pied Piper and always had a lot of neighborhood children along also. He always walked us down to Sam's Corner store, and bought candy and ice cream for every child there. On that day I always had many friends, some that didn't come around until Uncle Ervin arrived. He worked for the railroad in Chicago most of his lifetime, when I knew of him. When he retired he and Aunt Ethel moved to Mesa, Arizona. Not long after he retired his son Paul also left the railroad and moved his family to Mesa. Uncle Ervin used to send me pictures of his home in Arizona at Christmas time with the Cactus in his yard decorated like a Christmas tree. I always enjoyed his humor and his bright smile. He was a happy man, and shared that with all who were around him. He loved to play practical jokes on my dad, and included me in the fun--anything to be teasing. I credit his humor and happiness for extending his life to the age of 106 years, when he passed away. He had a very long life, and looked much younger than he actually was.

Amy's birth was July 28, 1894, but was recorded on August 1 in the county records. She was born in Benton Twp, Paulding Co, Ohio. All her other siblings were also born in Paulding Co, some in different townships, , except for Estella, who was born in Iowa. She was a tiny little woman, and was about 4' 10" tall, and very proud of being taller than her mother. She had great dignity, had a fiery, proud, spirit I always admired. Like her father she was not afraid to speak her mind, and did so frequently.
She married her husband in Hillsdale, Michigan. Their first son Willard was born in Haviland, Ohio. In time there was another son named Howard, but he was born at Grover Hill, in Paulding Co, Ohio. She and her husband Phillip moved north to Michigan for him to find work in the Buick Motor Plant as a painter. It was in Michigan that their first son Williard became ill and died, at the age of 6. He died of one of the many childhood diseases that in those days was not easily controlled. It was Scarlet Fever that took his life. I remember Aunt Amy saying that there were a lot of children lost at that time, in an epidemic. Willard was laid to rest in Grace Lawn Cemetery, in Flint.
Her husband, Phillip Wesson Dickenson, changed his name later on to Paul Elton Dickenson, and died at the early age of 59. She was a widow, surviving him by 36 years, and always dedicated to his memory. She struggled financially, at times, because in those days women didn't get credit easily, and it was hard for her to purchase large items, such as furniture. She worked very hard to earn money, and I remember when she proudly bought a lemon yellow Buick Skylark, she could barely drive because she was so tiny. She had to sit on pillows, and other things just to see over the dashboard. My husband made her a rubber cap to put over the the brake pad so that she could reach it more easily.
She ran the Paris Hat Shop in downtown Flint, and always had a new hat to wear. She often got hats for family members, especially her mother, who also wore a hat everywhere she went. In those days it was fashionable to wear hats, and women especially wore them to church. She was the person who helped me buy my very first hat for church, and took the fitting of it very seriously. She enjoyed it much more than I did though--I really want to buy hats.
One of the frustrations she had was buying clothing. At her size it was not easy to find things that were adult looking and fit well. I remember her having things made for herself by a seamstress. And later on she was able to shop in stores that catered to petite women. She was so small that the clothes in the children's department fit her the best. But, she was always stylishly dressed, and quite the lady.
One of my fondest memories was of Aunt Amy's peanut butter fudge. She always made the best, and kept it in the refrigerator in an empty peanut butter jar. I asked her for her recipe once, hoping to duplicate it, but it was never as good as hers. She just had that special touch with peanut butter fudge.
I recall that she collected elephants, and that I got to play with them when I visited her home. She moved into a trailer on Dort Highway, at the Elm's Trailer Park, in July of 1964, and her mother went to live with her there in 1965. After her mother's death she sold the trailer, and moved to a retirement complex. She moved to Reichart Manor, a retirement complex in downtown Flint, first. From there she lived in a retirement complex on Center Road, in Flint, where I visited her often. She had several mini strokes after that time, and started to have difficulty with the simple things in life. When it was apparent that she couldn't be alone, and had reached the advanced age of 94, she entered the Hammond Nursing home in Fenton. She was still able to care for her own personal needs until the day she passed away, having had more strokes after that time, and heart problems as well.
She very much impacted the lives of those around her. My brothers called her "Mamie", rather than Amy, and treated her with great respect. She had a way of commanding that from people, while endearing herself to them. She too was very strong on her political beliefs, and her right to vote. Women of her era fought hard for that privilege, and she exercised it just as her mother did. If you wanted a good debate, all you had to do was mention politics to Aunt Amy or Grandma Clara--they would fight to the death for their rights. That was one area I tried to avoid to keep out of an altercation.

I don't know much about him as grandma didn't talk about him very much. She always referred to him as her "precious baby boy". Often dad would take her back to Ohio to visit the graves in the Dealy Cemetery. I remember being there several times to clean up the area and place flowers on the graves of loved ones.

Gladys was the real beauty of the family. She had striking reddish hair that was always in curls around the back of her neck. She was very fair, like the Mitchell side of the family, and her skin burned easily in the sun. She was excused from gardening often because of this, and wore big hats to keep the sun off her face. That was often a source of irritation when her sisters talked about their childhood experiences because none of them were excused from that chore.
She married Glen Callahan in 1923 in Flint, Michigan. She often related that she had hoped for a large family, but that didn't transpire. She had one son, Gary, in 1943, and that was the only child she had. Sometime after Gary's birth in 1943, in Flint, Glen and Gladys moved to Detroit, where Glen worked for General Motors. They lived there for a time, and then moved to California. In California they purchased and managed a hotel, and were still doing that later in their lives. My family visited them at that establishment when we were there in the 1970's. They remained there until the end of their lives. Gladys survived her husband by 10 years, and was age 94 at the time of her death. I will always remember her happy, sunny, disposition. Always laughing, and enjoying life. She was very pleasant to have around, although we didn't see her very often here in Michigan.

When he was born his mother named him Lester Theodore. But, his older sister Amy, did not like the boy down the street whose name was Lester. So, when the census taker came to the house, and she was the only one at home old enough to answer questions, she gave his name as John Willis Mitchell Jr., after her dad. From that point on dad had confusion in his life over his name. His family started calling him John, and from then on he was John, except legally. Eventually, in time, he had his name corrected legally so that he was then Lester Theodore Mitchell, rather than John Willis Mitchell Jr. Because of the double names there was always 2 names in the phone book, listed for our house. That was so the people who called him John could find him. And also, those who knew him as Lester, could also find him.
When he was about 6 years of age he was left at home with his older sisters Amy and Estella, and his older brothers. His parents went to town, and told Amy to take care of him. He was an adventurous little boy, and when out of Amy's sight, he attempted to fill a kerosene stove. He had seen his dad do this so many times, and thought he too could do that. As he was filling the stove some of the kerosene dripped down his sleeve, and when he lit a match to start the stove, he ignited a large portion of his body. He suffered severe enough burns that Doc Hannah told grandma it was time to have another baby because John was not going to make it. Doc amputated the burned little finger on his left hand, and bandaged him up as best he could. Grandma decided that she was NOT going to lose another child, so she did everything she could do to save John's life. Eventually the cords in his and and arm pulled his hand into a distorted shape that remained with him his entire lifetime. His fingers were webbed together, so Grandma took the butcher knife and cut them apart.
Lester was a very intelligent man, and very well read. He seemed to gravitate to learning because of the things he couldn't do as a child, because of his infirmity. Grandma tried her best to convince him to be a preacher, but he didn't want any part of that. He attended the Presbyterian Church as a young man, and met his wife Dorothy there. They attended Parkland Presbyterian Church for many years, and then Farnumwood Presbyterian.

Dad often went to visit family members in various parts of the country. When mom was living they pulled a trailer everywhere they went. They wrecked several of them before they finally decided to just park it somewhere and pay lot rent on it. I always said, when they pulled away, that they looked like an accident trying to find a place to happen. One wreck actually left them hanging over an overpass out West, where they had to be rescued by the police. They often went to Florida and stayed in several places down there. Dad bought an orange grove there and planned to make big money selling oranges and grapefruit. Later on they went to Texas, down to McAllen. He did sell the oranges, but didn't make the money he thought he would. As always, it was an adventure to him.

Lowell was born in 1907 in Tipton, Benton Twp, Paulding Co, Ohio. He moved to Michigan with his family when they came here in 1922. He began working at Smith Bridgeman's Department Store at the age of 16, and then married his first wife Grace Forbes in Flint in 1925. There were 5 children from that marriage. They were Lowell Jr., Gene, Garr, Paul, and Lois. During WWII Lowell served in the U.S. Navy with his son, Lowell Jr., and then returned to work for Smith Bridgeman's. Eventually Lowell and Grace divorced.
He was working at Smith Bridgeman's Department Store downtown Flint, as Building Superintendent, when he met his second wife, Margaret Curnow. They married in 1949, and had 3 sons, Craig, Scott, and Brent. Aunt Margaret worked for the school system in Flint, after her children were grown. First at Martin School, then Oak School, and finally at Eiesenhower Elementary School, on Court St, as a Secretary. She eventually retired from there, as Lowell had also retired.
Lowell died in 1985 at his residence in Flint, and is buried at Sunset Hills Cemetery. In this year of 2002 Margaret is still living in her home on Forest Hill, in Flint, and her son Craig lives with her. She has always been a talented needleworker who made many beautiful things--mostly needlepoint.

George was born in Paulding Co, Ohio, and migrated to Michigan in 1921, with his family. He married Floretta Blakely in Clio, Michigan. For a time they lived in Flint, Michigan, and then moved to Rochester, and later on to Troy. Uncle George worked for General Motors, and Aunt Floretta was a teacher. After they retired they traveled a lot, staying in warm places in the winter. They liked Florida and Texas, and were often wintering close to my parents, Lester and Dorothy Mitchell.
Aunt Floretta loved teaching school. She spoke of her experiences and the kids she taught often. I was teaching at the time, and we would talk about the fun we had in the classroom. Even in retirement, while in Texas, she thought about her years as a teacher. Her daughter Aloyce also was a teacher, in Ann Arbor. She is gone now, and so is Aloyce, in the year 2002. I know it would please them to know that Aloyce's daughter Cheryl has gone on in her education, and is now a teacher in the Ann Arbor area.
Uncle George and Aunt Floretta had a home in Port Hope, Huron Co, Michigan, on Lake Huron, in their retirement years. They lived there in the summer months, and wintered where it was warm. Uncle George was always working hard, and building things, even in his later years. He was carrying large chunks of cement on the lake, for a backwash, and suffered a massive heart attack. He never quit even though he had angina pains, and it took his life. He inherited the heart problems of his ancestors, dying at the age of 81. He was everything to Aunt Floretta who missed him very much. She only lived 3 years after his death. She was living with her daughter Elaine in Garden City, Mich, when she passed away.

In 1904 Rhoda's mother, Louisa Blamer Mitchell Baughman, died in Oceana Co, Mich. A few months earlier Laura, Louisa's youngest daughter had already married David Conrad, so she was not at home. After that point in time Rhoda, her husband, and her children, packed up and moved to Washington State for the lumbering business, which was slowing it's pace in Michigan. They took with them Lydia (Mitchell) Skillman, a sister who had married Albert Skillman, and Alma (Baughman) Harrington, a 1/2 sister of Lydia and Rhoda, who had married Merton Harrington--both Lydia and Alma had married in Oceana Co. Andrew Mitchell, a brother who was single, also went along with them. They are not in the 1910 census in Michigan, so they moved between 1904 & 1910 to Washington State, and located in Gray's Harbor Co, Washington, in Elma.

Mrs. Koutecky was born in Iowa. She came to Washington in 1900. She lived in Elma, Gray's Harbor county, before she came to Seattle in 1921. The Birth records book recorded in Delaware Co, Ohio, lists George James & A. Garfield Mitchell as a set of twins, rather than one person. The Delaware Co. Genealogy Society states that A. Garfield Mitchell died at birth. However, family tradition has it that they were the same person and that George had been named for President James A. Garfield, who had been assassinated. I checked back with the Delaware Co Genealogical Society and they pulled the microfilm for the RECORD OF BIRTHS, PROBATE COURT, DELAWARE COUNTY, OHIO, PG 152, and wrote this message to me--"The name of the baby was listed as: George James, with A. Garfield written above an insertion mark after the name James. Above George James is written A. Garfield. Whoever transcribed the record must have assumed the record to indicate twins, but the way it is noted it could very well be George James A. Garfield Mitchell. There is no notation on the page indicating twins." So, I assume family tradition, and the Delaware Co, Ohio, Probate Court records, to be correct, and there was only a single birth of our George James A. Garfield Mitchell.

A search of vital records in Oceana Co and Mason Co, Michigan revealed no marriage date or application for marriage for Corrine and George. A request for Marriage Record was then sent to the State of Michigan for a state wide search between the years 1905-1907 as that was the time frame I thought they may have married in. Later information given by family members show that their first child was born in 1913, so they may have married later than the dates I attempted to do my research.
