Notes on the Lists

Cambridge District

The lists (images, transcription and index) along with analysis and background information are in my book at this link: "Wealth in Early Upstate New York: Cambridge District Tax Lists of 1779, 1787, 1788".

Overall, there are 1,281 entries for the three years, although many are the same person present in more than one year. The number of entries/persons listed in each year are:

  • 1779: 165
  • 1787: 555
  • 1788: 561

1779: There are two personal estate and one real estate list. It seems very likely that there were other lists that have apparently been lost.

1788: There are three sheets of orders to collectors but only two lists in the 1788 folder. I am not sure, but I suspect that the first list was for the southern part of the Cambridge District (since it contains Lake and Van Corlaer residents from the White Creek area) while the second list may be the northern part of the district, including the town of Cambridge.

Hoosick District

The lists (images, transcription and index) along with analysis and background information are in my book at this link: "Wealth in Early Upstate New York: Hoosick District Tax Lists of 1779, 1787, 1788".

Overall, there are 961 entries for the three years, although many are the same person present in more than one year. The number of entries/persons listed in each year are:

  • 1779: 181
  • 1787: 358
  • 1788: 422
