Teacher Autobiographies to 1935 by Wesley Johnston

I am a descendant of the Koutecký family of Modřejovice, which is in the municipality of Slabce. I discovered on the Prague Archive web site's "Archival Records" (as opposed to "Register Records") a hand-written book with 90 images titled titled Autobiografie učitelstva obecné a měštanské školy v Slabcich (Teaching Autobiography of General and Municipal School in Slabce). The book was begun in 1887 by teacher Sebald Jirotka. Teacher Bohumir Kotik wrote a history of the school and earlier teachers back to 1841. This web page presents an index to the book (with links to the specific pages) and also statistical summaries and observations about the book and the teachers. About the Book

Caveat: Let me state up front: I do not speak nor read Czech, with very specific exceptions. I am able to read dates and at least usually know which words refer to a birthplace. But I am not able to figure out -- without researching maps -- the map name of a place that is written with the modified declined form. So some of the place names in the lists below are in their map form, while some are in the form in which they appear in the book. There are also question marks for some entries, since I was unsure if what I was reading was the birth date or something that otherwise did not fit the usual way in which birth dates and places were presented. In particular, I cannot read the narrative text in the introduction nor in the autobiographies, so that I am certain to have missed important information in the narratives. So please if you see errors or if you can read the narrative text and provide insight or a translation, please contact me to make this web page better.

There appear to be pages in the book that are have been moved and are out of chronological order, and I am not sure how all of them fit properly. Images 16 and 17 are dated 1887, while images 10-14 are dated 1888-1892, so that it appears that images 16 and 17 were removed from an earlier place in the book and inserted in their present position. They may have belonged after image 9 (the last prior image dated 1887), but I do no know for sure. Bohumir Kotik's biography may be the key to figuring this out, aince it starts on image 17 but continues on an image that I cannot yet discern, since I cannot read the narrative text.

The title page (image 2, not the front cover) shows the book begun in 1887 by Sebald Jirotka. It appears that images 3-8 are an introduction, apparently -- I AM NOT SURE -- written by Bohumir Kotik. There are 94 names in the book. The last autobiography was written in 1935. The birth years (not all names have birth years given) range from 1823 to 1912.

Image 18 contains the only photograph, dated 1893.

Statistics and Observations

Gender: 87.2% (N=82) of the teachers were men, and 12.8% were women.

Age: For those who gave their birth year and dated their autobiography, the ages range from 92 to 55. The average (mean) age is 26.3. The median age is 24, and the mode (most frequent) is 23. Only 10 of the 94 were older than 30, with 84 (89.4%) 29 or younger.

Birthplace: While there are a good number from Slabce and other towns within and near the municipality, including the area of Rakovník, the okres (district, roughly equivalent to a county in the United States) that includes Slabce. But it appears that more came from other places. If we ever come up with the definitive places for all of these, this can be more precisely determined.

Gaps and attrition: If the 1893 photo is typical, the staff was about 6 people at any one time. In the early years after 1887, there was only 1 entry each year until 1894 had no new entry. From 1895 to 1900, there were 2 each year (except 1 in 1895 and 3 in 1899). Then there is a gap of 3 years with no new entries, followed by a single entry in 1903 and then another gap of 2 years until 2 new entries in 1905. So in the 4-year period from 1901-1904, there was only one new entry. After 1905, entries appeared each year until World War I in 1914. In the 7 years from 1914-1920 there was only one year (1915) with any entries (3). Of course, these years also saw the formation of the nation of Czechoslovakia. In 1921, there were 5 new entries with 2 more in 1922. Then there is a gap until 5 more entries in 1927. There were then 2 entries in 1928 and 2 more in 1929, followed by a 3 year gap until 2 more in 1932 and then another gap until the final single entry in 1935. I do not know the reasons for these gaps, but those more familiar with the history of the area may be able to explain some of these gaps.
