The following was sent by Elma (Buehler) Lehmann to her cousin Walter Johnston's son Wesley in 1987. I have added some square-bracketed notations and reformatted the text for easier reading. Elma's mother Marie (Staack) Buehler was the daughter of Fred Staack and Katherine Schaumburg.
Parents were Adam and Wilhelmina (Gelis) Schaumburg, whose children were Mary Kluth, William, August, John and Henry Schaumburg and of course Katherine Staack.
Katherine was born on July 22, 1868 in New Ulm Minnesota. [WJ: This is incorrect. She was born in Chicago, as was her brother August. The family appears in the 1870 Chicago Census, showing the two children born in Illinois.] Her godchild was her daughter Minnie Vandre's daughter Katherine (Vandre) Hoffman.
Grandma always was a houseworker. Loved to sew, cook, bake and take care of her children.
Dr. Fisher had his office at 30 N. Michigan Ave Chicago. Dr. Fisher took care of her since 1928 when he found the onset of Pernicious Anemia when she was entered into St. Luke's Hospital. He gave her free medicine of liver pieces to put into her food. She was in the hospital on and off. But the last time in the hospital Dr. Fisher was called in at 11:35 A. M. February 3, 1934 when she passed away from Pernicious Anemia. Informant was her daughter Marie Buehler.
Was laid to rest at Varrchein [WJ: probably Van Vechten] Lain at 316 W 63rd St Chicago. Burial was at the family plot in Waldheim Cemetery [WJ: see maps in Media Gallery]. Forest Park, Il. She was one of the owners of the Schaumburg & Staack. [WJ: I think Elma meant that she was once owner of the family cemetery plot.]
My Memories of Grandma
She made the best lemon cream pie in the world. Us grandchildren could never get enough of her pie. Also made bread pudding and showed us how to sew.
