Wesley Johnston and John Butson's Early Butson Research
Later Butsons - Bodinnick, Fowey & Polruan Ship Builders

The ship building Butsons of Bodinnick, Fowey, Mevagissey and Polruan have extensive descendants, including two lines in Canada, one of which were boat builders at Midland-Penatanguishine, Ontario. Their house at Bodinnick later (1925) became the home of the family of Daphne du Maurier, who wrote the first of her novels there. They also ran the Ferry Inn, which like the house was at the landing of the ferry from Fowey.

The couple who brought their family to Bodinnick were Nicholas Butson (1779-1844) and Ann Hunkin.

This page gathers together the research of John Butson of Plymouth, Devon, on this branch of our Butson family. At this point, the page is simply a repository of files. But the page is long overdue, since John and his wife Carol (who has fully partnered in this research) have gathered a great deal of information, and it is important that this be shared -- even via this imperfect web page.
