Harry Butson-Helen Rogers - Elopment Foiled - 23 Apr 1929 San Diego Union p 4 col 4-5 Dan Cupid 'Busts' Bow, Marriage Plans, Auto, Hopes - Oh, Dear Me! -------- Plans of a San Diego young couple to marry in Los Angeles where they had fled were abruptly halted last week when the truant lovers were found by the prospective bride's parents and towed home in the would be bridegroom's car. ---- Last Wednesday Helen Rogers and Harry Butson decided to marry. Both are under age. Neither had their parents' consent. Undaunted they drove to Los Angeles. They filed notice of intention to marry and then fled to young Butson's grandmother's home to await expiration of the five-day period before obtaining the license. ---- Parents of the couple became alarmed. They requested authorities to arrest the runaways. To hurry matters along they drove to Los Angeles. There they canceled the license application. Mr. Butson, senior, found the couple at the young man's grandmother's. ---- Informed that their application had been revoked the disappointed couple started for San Diego. En route they burned out a bearing in their car. Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Rogers, the girl's parents, gave them a two. Finally their car had to be abandoned. The trip was concluded in the Rogers' machine. ----- A family consultation followed. It was agreed to allow the young couple to take out another application, this time in San Diego. Date for the wedding, which will be at the bride's home, 2221 Madison avenue, has not been announced. |
