Tjitte Heerkes family taking surname SMIT under 1811 decree
Tjitte Heerkes family taking surname SMIT under 1811 decree
In 1811, when the Netherlands was under the domain of France, Napoleon, emperor of France, decreed that all the Frieslanders should have surnames. This is the page in the registry (29_05 Joure - folio 69 verso) for Joure on which Tjitte Heerkes officially takes the surname SMIT. The page then lists his children (his wife would have had a different surname): Heerke, age 20; Janke, 12; Bontje, 9; Jentje, 5 - all living at Joure; the record is dated 15 Mar 1812

William Schuiling Birth (probable duplicate, with wrong year, of 19 Mar 1901 birth)
William Schuiling Birth (probable duplicate, with wrong year, of 19 Mar 1901 birth)
I am not certain that this is a duplicate of the William born on the same month and day (19 Mar) but the following year (1901) to the same parents. They married 1 May 1900. It is possible that they had a 1900 son William who died, although I have not found a death record for him. But I really suspect that this is an erroneous duplicate report of the 1901 birth, so that until I have evidence to the contrary I am carrying it as such. -- Wesley Johnston ****** Record Number 17339; born 19 Mar 1900; William Schuiling; male, white; birthplace Grand Rapids; parents Jacob and Jennie Schuiling of 863 East Fulton, both born Michigan; father's occupation Machinist; Record Date [date Kent County transcript made for State of Michigan] 15 May 1901
